Damien Williams 2022 Outlook
The Falcons' running back room was never going to stay static -- so some move was coming and Williams was the first addition. The veteran has averaged 4.2 yards per carry in his career and has special teams experience from early in his career in Miami. Does this mean something for Cordarrelle Patterson? Probably not much more than the selection of Tyler Allgeier in the fifth round of April's draft. They're on hand to compete for touches alongside Patterson after Mike Davis' disappointing 2021 season led to his release this offseason. ... Williams has shown promise in the past -- he gained 4.5 yards per carry in 2020 with Kansas City during the best year of his career, but he never has been the lead back. So if Atlanta expects him to become that, it should have learned its lesson with Davis a season ago. But if the expectation is for the journeyman to come in and be a part of a multi-faceted backfield, then it could be a really strong signing. By the way, Allgeier, a hard-running 224 pounder, is a player to watch here given the circumstances. His 50 broken tackles last season at BYU were the most in the FBS, so he's not inclined to go down on the first hit. As ESPN.com notes, the rookie's style is more of a one-cut back than someone who is going to dance around waiting for a hole to open.
