Jerick McKinnon 2023 Outlook
McKinnon is the last player on this list whose fantasy reputation is that of a PPR specialist. McKinnon ranked ninth among all running backs in targets, ninth in receptions, fourth in receiving yards and first in receiving touchdowns in 2022. Now, is nine a sustainable number of receiving scores that we can count on him to replicate? No. Before 2022 McKinnon had seven for his career. But the greater point stands that he has potential in this Kansas City Chiefs’ offense to get the ball in multiple ways and make something happen once he does. The ceiling may be high, but the floor is low. Like last year, McKinnon will share a backfield with Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. You may see McKinnon listed ahead of Edwards-Helaire on unofficial Chiefs depth charts online, but a healthy Edwards-Helaire is still a better yards-per-carry option for them and should receive more totes. McKinnon had just four carries in the AFC Championship Game and four in the Super Bowl. If you want McKinnon as a flex option off your bench, you’ll want Pacheco in an earlier round.
Jerick McKinnon 2021 Outlook
Kansas City had shown some early interest in the free-agent running back market, inquiring about Giovani Bernard, but when he signed with the Buccaneers, the Chiefs inked McKinnon to a one-year deal. According to USA Today, they were specifically looking for someone who can contribute in the passing game. At his height with the Vikings in 2017, McKinnon rushed for over 500 yards and caught over 50 passes for over 400 yards. He definitely fits what the Chiefs have been looking for. The problem with McKinnon has been availability. A torn ACL kept him off the field for both the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the 49ers. He appeared in all 16 games in 2020 with four starts for San Francisco. He carried the ball 81 times for 319 yards and five touchdowns and also caught 41 passes for over 250 yards and a score. Hopefully, several years removed from the injury, McKinnon can return to the best version of himself in Kansas City. The veteran running back will create some competition at the bottom of the roster, namely with former sixth-round draft pick Darwin Thompson. Still, the general expectation is Clyde Edwards-Helaire playing a more prominent role in the passing game this season.
