The Facts: Sidelined the past two seasons with a right knee injury, McKinnon’s comeback 2.0 is drawing rave reviews. Particularly encouraging is how he looks curling out of the backfield on receiving routes, which tests his knee more so than straight-ahead rushing and is an asset the offense has lacked.
Diehards Line:“Even just throwing routes on air this offseason, he runs them differently than most running backs and he has a feel that’s like a receiver, but he feels space like a quarterback,” QB Jimmy Garoppolo said. “It’s very unique and I’m excited to get him back, man. It’s been a while. We came in together, me and him when we both signed here, and it’s exciting to have him back. ...” McKinnon told reporters in May his right knee, twice surgically repaired, that his rehab was going well. Now he appears to be on track to fit into a backfield led by Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jeff Wilson. Remember, Matt Breida, another member of the committee, was traded to Miami during last month's NFL Draft.
