Jimmy Garoppolo 2022 Outlook
Last March, the 49ers made a trade up to the third pick in the draft. Trey Lance became the pick. Garoppolo was recently asked about the 2021 season, with Lance as the highly-touted new guy. While Garoppolo praised Lance for being "down to earth" and "not entitled," it became obvious that Garoppolo didn't regard the overall experience in 2021 as a positive one. "It was a strange year," Garoppolo said. "I don't know if I'd wish that on anybody." As Profootballtalk.com noted, the comment came at a time when the 49ers have yet to find a trade partner for Garoppolo, due in large part to the shoulder surgery he underwent earlier this offseason. The chances of finding someone to take on his $25 million compensation package are slim. At some point, the 49ers may have to decide between cutting him or keeping him. It's hard to imagine the 49ers keeping him. It's hard to imagine Garoppolo wanting to be kept for 2022, based on what he said about 2021. But if he does remain with the Niners, and Lance opens the season as the starter but struggles? Things could get very interesting. ... For now, fantasy managers should take a wait and see approach with Jimmy G while keeping a close eye on reports of Lance's progress in training camp.
Jimmy Garoppolo 2021 Outlook
Make no mistake: The clock is ticking on Jimmy G's tenure in San Francisco. The plan, for now, seems to be for No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance to develop behind Garoppolo until the rookie is deemed ready to take over permanently. But the Niners didn't trade three first-round picks to leap into the third position without some expectations. As ESPN.com notes, even though coach Kyle Shanahan isn't putting any sort of timeline on what he wants: "Jimmy to be here and I want this kid brought along. If it turns into a competition, it turns into a competition." Competition would probably be good for all involved, but it will still come as a surprise if Lance doesn’t start at some point during this season. After all, Carson Palmer in 2003 is the only quarterback during the common draft era taken in the top three not to start a single game in his rookie season. While the 49ers are 24-9, including the postseason, in games Garoppolo has started since he arrived in a trade with the Patriots, he's missed 23 games the past three seasons with various injuries. He played only six in 2020 because of high-ankle sprains. So given the draft-day upgrade and Garoppolo's injury history, fantasy managers might want to invest elsewhere for their QB2.
Jimmy Garoppolo 2020 Outlook
Don't look now, but Garoppolo hasn't exactly been the franchise quarterback his highly lucrative contract makes him out to be. Statistically, Garoppolo put together a good year in 2019. But when the 49ers needed a quick strike to regain the lead in Super Bowl LIV, Garoppolo was unable to get the job done, most notably missing an open Emmanuel Sanders deep in the waning minutes of the game. The 49ers are a Super Bowl contender again in 2020, but their quarterback hasn't yet proven that he's a Super Bowl-caliber signal-caller. Nor should he even be considered a front-line fantasy starter. As FantasyPros noted, Garoppolo ranked eighth among eligible quarterbacks in points per pass attempt (0.51) and ninth in points per completion (0.75), but his lack of total completions and attempts kept him out of the top 15. He also averaged just 0.27 points per rushing attempt. Beyond that, a league-low 45.8 percent of Garoppolo's passing yards came through the air, which only highlights just how good Garoppolo's receivers were after the catch. Are there reasons for optimism? Garoppolo threw a touchdown on 22.6 percent of his passes that went over 20 yards in the air, which led the league. Perhaps HC Kyle Shanahan will take note and let his triggerman take more shots down the field.
