Tyler Eifert 2019 Outlook
Coming off yet another season cut short by injury (this time a gruesome, dislocated ankle), Eifert still believes he can be "that guy" again. You know, the guy who caught 13 touchdowns in 2015. The red-zone TD machine who has played in just 12 of the 48 games since he tore ankle ligaments in the '15 Pro Bowl. The guy who might be the kind of offensive chess piece/weapon that allows new HC Zac Taylor to be even more creative than he might otherwise be. So, yes, Eifert has struggled to stay on the field, and he's staring at a second straight free-agent year. So, if you're the Bengals, what do you do? You roll with it. Eifert takes a ton of pressure off players like A.J. Green, forcing defenses to shift in his direction to honor his presence. When healthy, he's nearly impossible to defend and has been a key component of the offense. Adding to the intrigue, rookie TE Drew Sample's early efforts have been impressive enough for observers to suggest he'll be ready to make an immediate contribution as a blocker, allowing Taylor to maximize Eifert's unique talents in the passing attack to an even greater effect. It's something worth watching even if you don't want to pay up for it.
Tyler Eifert 2018 Outlook
Eifert and the Bengals reached agreement on a one-year deal, and the talented-but-tender tight end is staying in Cincinnati. There was a real question as to whether the Bengals would bid on him given that Eifert has played just 10 games in the last two seasons, and health has been a big issue throughout his career. How big an issue? He's only been on the field for 39 of a possible 80 games since he entered the league. That includes fewer than three games two of the past four years. When healthy, however, the upside is there. As ESPN.com's Mike Clay reminded readers, Eifert missed three games in 2015, but still led tight ends in the league with 13 touchdowns. He missed eight games in 2016, but scored five touchdowns and ranked seventh at the position in fantasy points per game. So, yes. Durability a major concern, but if he appears to be healthy and ready to roll for Week 1, he has enough upside to merit your attention on draft day especially as his likely price makes the potential rewards even more appealing.
