Robert Griffin III 2020 Outlook
From 2010-17, the Ravens went eight straight seasons with just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. However, for the past two seasons, they have kept three -- Lamar Jackson, Griffin and Trace McSorley last season. In 2020, the quarterback situation behind Jackson will be highly competitive. Griffin is entering his third season as a valued backup, McSorley continues to develop as a second-year quarterback, and the Ravens signed undrafted quarterback Tyler Huntley of Utah. Last year McSorley, a sixth-round draft pick, earned a roster spot after an extended preseason audition when Griffin suffered a training camp hand injury. However, once the regular season began and Griffin returned to health, McSorley was only active in Week 17, and it remains to be seen if he can earn snaps on special teams or become a versatile jack-of-all-trades offensive weapon like the Saints’ Taysom Hill. At age 30, Griffin, a former No. 2-overall pick and NFL Rookie of the Year (2012), is the most experienced and capable quarterback on the roster not named Jackson, but he is playing behind a 23-year-old who is the NFL's reigning MVP. Hopefully we don't see anybody under center for Baltimore other than Jackson, but given the way this offense is designed, the winner of the backup role is worth noting.
Robert Griffin III 2019 Outlook
Griffin rejuvenated his NFL career last season as Baltimore’s No. 3 quarterback after sitting out the 2017 season. Though he only saw brief action at quarterback in two games, completing two passes for 24 yards, Griffin impressed teammates and coaches with his preparation and with his play, winning a roster spot during the preseason. Griffin’s mobility, experience and familiarity with the Ravens’ offense makes him a suitable backup for Baltimore. If starter Lamar Jackson were to suffer an injury, Griffin can step in without the Ravens having to make major adjustments. The 29-year-old Griffin can also serve as a mentor for the 22-year-old Jackson. Griffin is a former Heisman Trophy winner (like Jackson), who understands what it’s like to enter the NFL as a quarterback with high expectations. The Ravens traded long-time starting quarterback Joe Flacco to the Denver Broncos this offseason, so Griffin’s role could become more important in 2019.
