CAROLINA PANTHERS UPDATE

lGRIER GETS ALL THE FIRST-TEAM REPS WEDNESDAY; OLSEN WORKS FULLY

Following up on this week's Team Notes. ... Interim coach Perry Fewell won’t come right out and say it, but the plan to start Will Grier at quarterback this week began with him taking all the reps with the starters in practice.

That’s something Grier hasn’t done at any point this season, until Wednesday, but Fewell was impressed with what he saw.

“He looked good,” Fewell said, via Joe Person of the Athletic.com. “He had command. He made good decisions and it looked like he had fun.”

The Panthers are going with Grier so they can get a look at their third-round pick in two games with interim coaches and interim teammates. Fewell said coaches began considering the switch a few weeks ago, but targeted Sunday’s game against the Colts as a logical jumping-off point.

The Panthers stuck with Kyle Allen for most of the season, and when he won his first four starts in relief of the injured Cam Newton that was fine.

In the eight games since then, Allen was picked off 15 times and sacked 35 times and the Panthers have lost six in a row.

The Panthers had hoped to treat this like a redshirt season for Grier, selected out of West Virginia with the 100th overall pick. That was before Newton's injury, Allen's struggles and Ron Rivera's firing.

For what it's worth, Fewell said Grier has shown improvement running the scout team the past few months.

Now he'll get his chance running the Carolina offense, something he has done on a limited basis since training camp.

Grier, who finished fourth in the 2018 Heisman voting, played two seasons at West Virginia after spending 2015 at Florida.

Meanwhile, Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen was a full participant in practice and is slated to play on Sunday after missing the past two games with a concussion.

Olsen said on Monday he'd been cleared from the protocol, and he is playing the last two games as though they may be his last in the league. As ESPN.com's David Newton notes, even though he has a year left on his contract, at age 34 Olsen understands with the coaching change there will be uncertainty about his future.
