Cam Newton 2021 Outlook
Newton returns to New England despite a less-than-impressive 2020 campaign (at least as a passer), finishing last in passing YPG (177.1) and TD-INT ratio among 26 QBs with 10-plus starts. But Newton was one of the league's most effective runners at quarterback, accounting for 592 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He also caught a pair of passes for 35 yards with a TD. As a result, Newton accounted for 13 of the Patriots' 32 scrimmage TDs (40.6 percent), the highest percentage by any player in the NFL -- next-closest QB was Arizona's Kyler Murray with 22.4 percent. Re-signing the veteran suggests the Pats believe Newton’s issues last season (including the QB's bout with COVID-19) had more to do with the offense's struggles than deteriorating skills. Having a full offseason under coordinator Josh McDaniels should also help. Even with Julian Edelman's retirement, free-agent acquisitions Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith, Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne join Jakobi Meyers and the returning James White to give Newton more pass-catching talents than he had last year. While the selection of Mac Jones with the 15th pick overall in April's draft is a concern, we still view Newton as a borderline QB2 with some week-to-week upside as long as he holds the job.
