Taylor Undergoing Groin Surgery Complicating Bills Offseason
Tyrod Taylor posted pictures on himself in a surgical gown on a hospital bed on his Snapchat account Thursday morning.

As Profootballtalk.com's Darin Gantt suggested, it was a pretty clear signal he’s having some degree of groin surgery, which could complicate many things for the Bills as they look for a new head coach.

The Bills subsequently confirmed in a team statement that Taylor chose to have surgery after seeking a second opinion this week. The statement read as follows.

"Taylor had a consultation visit yesterday with Dr. William Meyers and elected to have surgery this morning. The Bills were informed late yesterday of this morning’s procedure.

"No other details on the procedure were provided."

Assuming the fact he "elected" (and don't think the Bills didn't use that word by accident) doesn't become an issue and if Taylor isn’t able to pass a physical before the third day of the new league year, the remaining $27.5 million of injury guarantees in his contract will kick in, and the Bills will be on the hook for that sum.

If that's the case, Gantt believes they might as well keep him, because he’s shown to be a reasonably competent quarterback when well.

Of course, there’s also a possibility he’ll be cleared by March 11, though it sets the stage for a very interesting team physical. In fact, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport advised his Twitter followers that Taylor should indeed be able to pass the physical by the deadline -- which is more than 12 weeks away.

Still, the Bills benched him late in the season, in hopes of protecting him from harm, and giving them the option of parting ways without paying him those guarantees if the next coach wasn’t enamored with him.

And, as Gantt summed up, "With Taylor having the procedure, it could also complicates their hiring process, as a coach who doesn’t want to attach himself to Taylor’s surgically repaired wagon might not be inclined to join an organization which isn’t showing any signs of dysfunction whatsoever. ..."

For what it's worth, former Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly isn't sold on Taylor as a franchise QB.

"We do not have (a franchise quarterback) as of right now," Kelly said on ESPN Wednesday. "Tyrod Taylor, he did a lot of things this year and last year that a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL cannot do. But consistently, he just wasn't what we needed. He had to be more consistent on his throws. When we needed the first down to move the chains to win games, when we needed the first down to move the chains to continue that control of the ball to take time off the clock, we just didn't have that there."

According to NFL.com's Kevin Patra, the criticism from Kelly is noteworthy because it confirms recent reports about the team's assessment of Taylor's play. His struggles to consistently see and complete throws over the middle have been the source of complaints since 2015 when some on the coaching staff considered E.J. Manuel the better prospect.

Taylor's run-pass ability puts pressure on defenses, and he can throw one of the prettiest deep balls in the league when he lets it rip. However, the inconsistencies moving the chains hamper his argument that he can take Buffalo to the promised land.

We'll all be watching come March 11 to see how this plays out.
