2012 NFL Draft Summary -- Tight Ends
Coby Fleener – The Colts selected Fleener with the second pick of the second round. Fleener has good speed down the seam, works hard, has good hands and runs solid routes. He needs to improve his blocking and he can sharpen up his routes. Fleener will start immediately and should get a lot of looks from Andrew Luck. He’s a TE2 in redraft leagues while dynasty owners will look for him to develop into a top player at his position which will require a low first or high second round draft pick to acquire.

Dwayne Allen – The Colts selected Allen in the third round. Allen has an excellent release to compliment his excellent hands and he is a load to bring down. He’ll need to improve his concentration in traffic as well as upgrade his blocking. Allen could get plenty of reps if the Colts feature a multi-tight end set. He’ll be a low-level TE2 consideration in redraft leagues while dynasty leagues will look at him late in second or early in the third round.

Michael Egnew – The Dolphins selected Egnew in the third round. Egnew has very good hands and outstanding body control to go along with having excellent speed after the catch. He is not very strong and suffers as a blocker because of it. He’ll be eased into a role that will grow over time. That means he’ll be of little interest in redraft leagues but dynasty owners should be interested in what the future holds in the third round.

Ladarius Green – The Chargers selected Green in the fourth round. Green features good hands and excellent length along with solid speed. He’s yet another tight end who lacks power in his blocking and who needs to develop his route running. He’ll get the opportunity to learn behind Antonio Gates early in his career. Redraft owners should only become interested if Gates goes down to injury while dynasty owners should consider his future potential.

Evan Rodriguez – The Bears selected Rodriguez in the fourth round. Rodriguez has decent hands and adjusts well to poorly thrown balls. He’s not a physical player and he’s had plenty of off-field incidents to distract him. He’ll provide depth initially and have to work his way for greater importance as he goes. He can be ignored in redraft leagues which is what I recommend for dynasty owners at this point as well.

Orson Charles – The Bengals added Charles in the fourth round. Charles has big play ability to go with his solid hands and the burst to create separation. He lacks ideal size and will need to work on his routes. Charles will slowly be worked into the offense as a second tight end. His production will be limited this year which should have redraft owners looking elsewhere, but his potential is very high which will get the interest of dynasty owners.

Adrien Robinson – The Giants drafted Robinson in the fourth round. Robinson has amazing measurables featuring tremendous size and speed. He’s raw in all facets of the game but especially his blocking. Injuries at the position could open up a little field time for him this year. That should not be enough to draw the interest of redraft owners while dynasty owners should keep an eye on his progress.
