Shockey Goes Under The Knife
As initially reported by Associated Press sports writer Tom Canavan, Jeremy Shockey had surgery on his right foot on Tuesday that will cause him to miss the start of the New York Giants' training camp.

Shockey had a screw inserted into the fifth metatarsal of his foot by Dr. Robert Anderson in the procedure performed at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

The Giants didn't give a timetable for Shockey's recovery but they said he would be ready for the start of the regular season.

"With a fifth metatarsal surgery it is possible for an athlete to be back on the field quickly," Dr. Justin Greisberg, an orthopedic surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia said in a telephone interview with Canavan Tuesday evening.

Greisberg told Canavan an athlete can be back on the field in about six weeks, although some recoveries can take longer.

Shockey had a similar injury last season, but he didn't have surgery.

Shockey aggravated the foot during a recent mini-camp and a bone scan showed a hot spot. Shockey got four medical opinions before deciding to have the injury repaired surgically by Anderson, a noted foot surgeon.

"The dangerous thing about that is if I don't get it fixed, it probably won't occur (again) in training camp, it will happen in week six or seven," Shockey said last week. "I don't want that to happen. I might as well get it done now."

The third-year pro didn't recall hurting his foot on any particular play in mini-camp, suggesting it happened with wear and tear.

The Giants, who are looking to rebound from a 4-12 season, will report to their first training camp under Tom Coughlin on July 29.
