Christian Watson 2023 Outlook
Watson displayed promise as a rookie and figures to be better in future years. He has big-time speed so developing his pattern-running and upgrading his hands would help him take the next step. Watson had to learn how to understand the demands of now-former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers last year, and it wasn't always an easy task. Once Rodgers saw signs of Watson's talents, he established more confidence in him. Watson had 10 receptions for 88 yards through his first six NFL games before the breakout occurred. He caught four passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns against the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 13. Then four days later, he caught two more scoring passes against the Tennessee Titans. By the time he had four receptions for 110 yards and one touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 27, Watson's slow start seemed ages ago. He finished the season with three 100-yard outings. Having the offseason to develop rapport with new quarterback Jordan Love was crucial. Love knows the Green Bay system so he can help Watson take off.
Christian Watson 2022 Outlook
As Profootballtalk.com framed it, "All expectations were that the Packers would take a wide receiver early in this year's draft and they fulfilled them by taking Watson with the 34th overall pick early in the second round. ..." Watson averaged more than 20 yards a catch during his time at North Dakota State, and that big-play ability was highlighted by general manager Brian Gutekunst during a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Marquez Valdes-Scantling's departure as a free agent opened a specific role that Gutekunst thinks Watson can fill. "The speed and the size jump off the tape," Gutekunst said. "That's certainly going to give us something to take the top off the defense. With MVS leaving in free agency that will replace that I think initially." Valdes-Scantling wasn't the only receiver to leave the Packers this offseason, and Davante Adams had a more expansive role in the team's offense. Gutekunst said the team also likes Watson's "ability to develop into an all-around receiver" based on the variety of things he did while in college, but it appears the team won't be dropping him immediately into a similar role to the one Adams used to fill in their offense. If nothing else, joining a receiving corps led by Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and veteran newcomer Sammy Watkins certainly works in Watson's favor. Playing with Aaron Rodgers adds to that.
