Alec Pierce 2023 Outlook
Pierce showed strong potential early, with two games of at least 80 yards receiving out of the Colts’ first four contests. But the rookie from Cincinnati only surpassed that yardage plateau once the rest of the way, making four catches for 86 yards and a touchdown in Week 13 at Dallas. Two weeks later, Pierce had zero receptions on five targets in a 39-36 overtime loss at Minnesota, a game that saw the Colts squander an NFL-record 33-point halftime lead. While Colts brass hopes a regime change serves the enter organization, the hiring of coach Shane Steichen also could pay particular dividends for certain individuals, namely Pierce. Part of a vertical passing attack in college, Pierce now will suit up for a coach whose offense with the Philadelphia Eagles assuredly favored getting the ball downfield. Expect Indianapolis to uncork far more than the 38 pass attempts of 20 air yards or more that the team had last season. The athleticism of Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 overall selection in the April draft, also could create more opportunities for Pierce to shine in Year 2.
Alec Pierce 2022 Outlook
Pierce was selected by the Colts in the second round of April's draft. Pierce is expected to compete for the starting wide receiver role opposite Michael Pittman Jr. in the offense. As ESPN's Mike Clay noted, Pierce crushed it at the Combine with a class-best 40.5-inch vertical and 4.41 40-yard dash at 211 pounds. According to The Athletic's Stephen Holder, Pierce was a featured target in the red zone during team drills, making two eye-opening touchdown catches that each displayed his ability to use his long frame to his advantage. Indeed, Pierce combines that size with impressive body control that helps him snatch balls out of the air and, as he displayed multiple times during those initial sessions, keep his feet in bounds on perimeter throws in the red zone. "It becomes basketball down there," Pierce said of the red zone. "You have to go up and high-point the ball, rebound the ball. ..." Without much in the way of high-end producers beyond Pittman, Pierce appears heading to the WR2 role as a rookie. According to Clay, with Matt Ryan in town, Pierce very well could flirt with occasional flex value. He's worth a look in the late rounds.
