George Pickens 2023 Outlook
Pickens flashed his ability as a rookie even though Pittsburgh's passing game was highly anemic. The Steelers passed for an NFL-low 12 touchdown passes, but Pickens caught four of them, providing hope he'll someday approach double digits. Another good sign was that he had 38 receptions for first downs, displaying he'll be a reliable target on third downs. He also had a solid average yards per reception -- notable because of the lackluster passing offense behind Mitch Trubisky (five starts) and Kenny Pickett (12). Pickens had a 100-yard outing in Week 4 when Trubisky was the starter but during the season he also had games of zero and two yards with Pickett at quarterback and three yards with Trubisky. Pickens had six catches on three occasions but also had two or fewer six times, including the Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles with zero receptions while targeted three times. Most observers felt the Pittsburgh passing game production would drop without legendary Ben Roethlisberger, but it figures to improve in 2023. If it does, Pickens' numbers will get a big boost.
George Pickens 2022 Outlook
As ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay suggested, regardless of whether rookie Kenny Pickett or Mitchell Trubisky will be under center, Pittsburgh had to add some playmakers in the draft. Pickens was getting first-round buzz and could be a great get for Pittsburgh on Day 2. According to McShay, Pickens' best trait is tracking the deep ball. He accelerates off the line of scrimmage, knows when to get his head around to find the ball and has the second gear to run underneath it. Pickens is one of the most prolific receivers in Georgia history. An ACL tear in the spring of 2021 caused him to miss most of the national championship season, but he is healthy now and ready to contribute. Pittsburgh added another playmaker, though, who will fight with Pickens for touches. Memphis' Calvin Austin III is 5-8 but lightning fast and a threat to take the ball the distance any time he touches it, but Pickens has a chance to be a star. The question is will it be this year? Or will he serve more as insurance against possibility Diontae Johnson's contract becomes an issue next year (or Chase Claypool's the following)? Those short-term questions are just that, however. Dynasty managers should invest with confidence.
