Chris Olave 2023 Outlook
Olave had a fine rookie season but didn't find the end zone in the same manner as he did as a college standout at Ohio State. Some of that certainly had to do with the Saints having Andy Dalton (14 starts) and Jameis Winston (three starts) as the quarterbacks, but New Orleans upgraded in the offseason by bringing on Derek Carr as the new starter. That means Olave could double last season's TD count and perhaps threaten double digits. At Ohio State, Olave had 35 receiving touchdowns, including 13 in 2021 and 12 in 2019. You can also expect his yardage total to take a jump with Carr, the former Raiders star, at the helm. Olave had three 100-yard outings, topped by a 147-yard outing that came when he grabbed a season-best nine catches. He had at least three receptions in all 15 games played. His low yardage output was 40. Olave averaged in double digits in yards per reception in every game, another sign that his productivity will go up as he gets more experience going up against NFL defensive backs.
Chris Olave 2022 Outlook
As ESPN.com's Mike Triplett suggested, drafting Olave in the first round was one of the most obvious cases of filling a glaring need in the NFL draft to this point after the Saints finished 32nd in the league in passing offense last year. That they traded up from No. 16 to No. 11 to do it tells you how important it was. Obviously getting WR Michael Thomas and QB Jameis Winston back from injuries will help, but the Saints needed another dynamic pass-catcher -- and they got one: Olave, a player some had ranked at the top of this year's receiving class. According to ESPN's Mike Clay, Olave is a vertical receiver with good speed (4.39 40-yard dash) but underwhelming strength and size. That said, he can play inside and out and does most of his damage down field. He doesn't do much after the catch and will need to clean up late-career drops (seven in 2021). Still, the Saints have insisted all offseason they don't plan to rebuild under new coach Dennis Allen. And they proved it by drafting Olave and subsequently adding free agent Jarvis Landry to the mix. Olave's combination of polish, speed, route-running and ball skills supplies him with big upside, and he'll open the season as a fine flex option -- one that could quickly emerge as Winston's top target if the oft-injured Thomas misses more time.v
