Isiah Pacheco 2023 Outlook
Pacheco, the late seventh-round draft pick out of Rutgers, did not need much time to overtake Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon as the No. 1 back in Kansas City. He gained 4.9 yards per carry and caught all but one of his targets in the passing game. His usage in the playoffs -- double-digit carries in all three games, twice exceeding 75 yards -- signals he will be an important piece in the Chiefs’ offense going forward. As exciting of a player as Pacheco can be, there’s likely a ceiling on his fantasy potential as long as he plays for Kansas City. The Chiefs haven’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since Mahomes became the starter in 2018. They don’t need one. Mahomes threw 24 more passes in the red zone than any other NFL quarterback last year, restricting his running backs’ touchdown opportunities. And as of this writing, this depth chart still includes Edwards-Helaire and McKinnon, the latter of whom is a pass-catching specialist who saw 71 passing targets in 2022 compared to Pacheco’s 14.
