Rachaad White 2023 Outlook
A third-round draft pick in 2022, White could be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ lead back in his second pro season. Leonard Fournette was granted his release from the team and Giovani Bernard retired, leaving White and Ke’Shawn Vaughn the only holdovers from last year’s running back room. White saw limited game action until November, but he got his first career start when the Buccaneers beat the Seattle Seahawks in Munich, Germany. He broke out for career highs of 22 carries and 105 yards, including one highlight-reel play in which he threw Seahawks cornerback Quandre Diggs to the ground with a monstrous stiff arm in the open field. The Buccaneers ran the ball the fewest times of any NFL team in 2022 and the second-fewest in 2021, but expect that to at least partly change in the wake of Tom Brady’s retirement. Tampa Bay must find some balance to help Baker Mayfield (or Kyle Trask) take the reins of the offense. That should include letting White stiff-arm his way down the field on some first and 10s.
Rachaad White 2022 Outlook
After the Bucs drafted White in the third round of April's draft, GM Jason Licht talked about seeing the rookie potentially having a role in the passing game and on special teams. White caught 43 passes for Arizona State last season, so that seems like a logical place to look for him to fit into the offense. White, however, has his eyes on more than just that role. The Buccaneers have Leonard Fournette, Giovani Bernard, and Ke'Shawn Vaughn back from last year, but White said that he's looking to both learn from the more experienced backs and have a shot to beat them out. "My expectation, my goal is I'm going in there competing," White told USA Today. "I want to be the starting running back. ... I know I got Lenny in front of me. And you know I'm going to soak up a lot of knowledge from Lenny in that running backs room. That's just the type of guy I am. You know, I'm always a competitor first. ..." As Profootballtalk.com suggested, if White's pass-catching and pass protection skills transition to the NFL well enough to earn Tom Brady's trust, he should have a shot at a good amount of playing time whether he's nominally No. 1 on the depth chart or not. Expecting him to move ahead of Vaughn, now that his biggest supporter, Bruce Arians, is no longer in the picture, is plenty reasonable.
