James Cook 2023 Outlook
The Buffalo Bills’ running back depth chart is crowded. They have Nyheim Hines, a holdover from last season who finished 2022 with negative rushing yards and primarily contributed on special teams. They signed Latavius Murray, who at 33 is well past his prime from a fantasy perspective but might hawk goal-line carries. And they also added Damien Harris, the former New England Patriots starter. None of them should be RB1 in the 2023 season. It should be James Cook, who showed plenty of promise in his rookie season behind the now-departed Devin Singletary. The brother of Dalvin Cook averaged 5.7 yards per carry and found the end zone both rushing and receiving. When Cook was given the ball, he rarely disappointed. Now he’s the incumbent, not Harris, his expected tandem-mate. Cook only had four games with double-digit rushing attempts last year; expect that to go up and stay up. The Bills’ run/pass balance is not as out of whack as you may assume. Of course, the way Cook could elevate his value is to improve as a receiver; he was targeted 32 times as a rookie but caught a mediocre 21.
James Cook 2022 Outlook
We knew the Bills were looking for a receiving back heading into April's draft because they told us they were with their pursuit J.D. McKissic. While the free-agent running back ended up re-signing with Washington after initially agreeing to terms with the Bills, Buffalo has now found a dynamic rusher who can help the passing game. Cook -- the third running back selected and the brother of Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook -- had 27 catches without a drop last season and his four receiving touchdowns were tied for the most among running backs in FBS. As ESPN.com's Alaina Getzenberg notes, Cook had only two fumbles in his college career and averaged 6.5 yards per carry and 10.9 yards per catch. The Bills have invested two third-round picks in the running back position in the last four years, but have failed to find a go-to No. 1 back. While Devin Singletary ended the 2021 season on a positive note, he is entering the final year of his deal and has not shown an ability to consistently be "the guy." Cook's abilities as a versatile back will add an element to this offense that was previously missing. It will also provide fantasy managers with an option similar to what McKissic has been in Washington -- except in a better offense with a much better quarterback.
