Kenny Pickett 2023 Outlook
A first-round draft pick who made 12 starts as a rookie, Pickett barely made a blip on the roto radar and finished with more INTs than TDs. He did develop excellent chemistry with fellow rookie WR George Pickens and was on the same page with Diontae Johnson, although DJ somehow tallied 147 targets but zero touchdowns. The Steelers added Pro Bowl WR Allen Robinson and drafted 6-7, 270-pound Georgia TE Darnell Washington in the third round, giving their second-year signal-caller more tools to work with, but the jury is out on his fantasy potential. While jurors deliberate, coach Mike Tomlin has already rendered a verdict and a prediction for 2023. "I expect him to kill it," he said on the Rich Eisen Show. "It's his second lap around the track. ... And so I just think it's reasonable for him to have significant growth in all areas." Pickett did rush for three scores (two in his debut), a skill he had in his bag at Pitt with 20 career ground scores.
Kenny Pickett 2022 Outlook
As Profootballtalk.com noted, given Ben Roethlisberger's retirement after the 2021 season, Pittsburgh had a clear need for a quarterback of the future. Despite signing free agent Mitchell Trubisky, the club elected to keep Pickett playing in the same stadium where he was featured as a college player. According to ESPN.com's Brooke Pryor, the Steelers didn't want to let another franchise quarterback from Pitt escape like Dan Marino in the 1983 draft. And there's plenty to like. Pickett was the ACC player of the year and offensive player of the year in 2021. In 52 games with 49 starts, Pickett compiled a 33-16 record as a starter for the Panthers. In 2021, he threw for 4,319 yards with 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions, leading the team to an 11-2 record and the ACC Championship. He's a well-rounded prospect with mobility -- a trait coveted by the Steelers in their next franchise quarterback -- along with accuracy, size and a strong vertical game. With his confidence, leadership and aggressive play, Pickett has the swagger of a franchise quarterback. With Trubisky also on the roster, Pickett does not have to start right away for Pittsburgh. But sooner than later, he'll take over as the Steelers' QB1. Dynasty managers should invest accordingly while re-drafters will obviously want to lay off unless/until we see him moving towards the starting role more quickly than expected.
