Davis Mills 2022 Outlook
If there was hope for the future to be found anywhere in the Texans' dismal 2021 season, it was Mills. New head coach Lovie Smith saw plenty of Mills as the club's defensive coordinator last year, and is well aware of the rookie's promise. "For us, of course, Davis Mills came in and did some good things. You know, when you're not the starter, you get a chance to go against the (first) defense each week, so I got a chance to see him in a lot of different situations," Smith said. "He played about as well as any of the rookie quarterbacks did last year. So (I'm) excited about some of the things that he can bring." The rookie quarterback piloted two of the team's four wins over the final month of the season, and after being given the starting nod in Week 14, he threw nine touchdown passes with only two interceptions down the stretch. But it was a rough start as he threw six interceptions and failed to win a game over his first seven starts. Smith has promoted Pep Hamilton from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, giving Mills a familiar face to work with for his second year in the league. It remains to be seen whether the club selects a quarterback early in the draft despite the upward-pointing arrow on Mills; but with Deshaun Watson and Tyrod Taylor no longer in the picture, Mills will be part of the plan.
Davis Mills 2021 Outlook
As ESPN.com suggested, by drafting Mills in the third round of April's draft, the Texans invited questions about the status of their quarterback position for 2021 and beyond. Not only did Houston pick Mills, but it did so with its first pick of the draft. For his part, Mills was a highly-touted recruit who dealt with knee injuries and wasn’t healthy enough to compete to be Stanford’s starter until his third season. Once he won the job, Mills started 11 games, throwing 18 touchdowns over two seasons. When GM Nick Caserio was asked what he liked about Mills, he said the quarterback "played in a good offensive system, played for a good coach, has pretty good size, [was] fairly accurate with the ball, smart [and] makes fairly good decisions." Choosing a QB with the pick indicates Caserio and the Texans remain uncertain about Deshaun Watson's future and took a shot on a player they liked, in the hopes it will work out with Mills. If Watson never does play for the Texans again, the best-case scenario is that Mills develops into a starting-caliber quarterback over the next year or two. He should be given time to learn with Tyrod Taylor poised to begin the regular season as Houston's starting quarterback.
