Josh Palmer 2023 Outlook
Palmer more than doubled his receptions and receiving yards from his rookie year to his second season while scoring one fewer touchdown and maintaining an average yards per catch of 10.7. By any measure, 2022 was a breakthrough for the Tennessee draftee, who had two 100-yard efforts (at Atlanta, versus Kansas City) over a three-week span in November. He was one yard shy of accomplishing the feat a third time. Palmer remained a mainstay target for quarterback Justin Herbert as Keenan Allen and Mike Williams often were out of the lineup. Still, Los Angeles persevered and secured a wild card playoff berth thanks in large part to contributions from players like Palmer. The Chargers are well known for their passing prowess, and it will be interesting to see what kind of targets Palmer gets when he fits in alongside Allen and Williams in the lineup. Palmer contributed at least one catch in all but one game in which he appeared. A Week 17 win against the Chargers’ co-SoFi Stadium tenants, the Los Angeles Rams, was the lone exception.
Josh Palmer 2022 Outlook
The Chargers have one of the best receiver combos in the league with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. But one of their young players at the position also made an impact as a rookie in 2021. ... Palmer played all 17 games last season with five starts. He was on the field for just 38 percent of Los Angeles' offensive snaps. But one of those was a critical fourth-and-21 touchdown in Week 18 that helped the Chargers eventually force overtime against the Raiders. As Los Angeles' off-season program continues, Palmer said this week that he's keeping the same mentality from his rookie season as he approaches Year 2. "I was eager to come out and eager to learn," Palmer said. "I feel like I'll always have that type of eagerness and looking forward to coming to work, learning from Keenan and Mike every day. ... I don't think that's ever going to change. It could be Year 12 and I'm still going to be eager to learn from whoever is younger than me or older than me in that room. ..." As NFL.com notes, Palmer will have those same receivers ahead of him in Allen and Williams. But with another season alongside quarterback Justin Herbert, Palmer could be in store for some more clutch catches in 2022.
