Khalil Herbert 2023 Outlook
When your teammate is the seventh-leading rusher in the NFL, you are understandably missing out on some opportunities to produce. When that teammate is not a fellow running back but the quarterback, it must be more frustrating. The Chicago Bears led the league in rushing yardage and touchdowns while ranking second in attempts in 2022, but the majority of that production was due to Justin Fields’ impact once he became the starting QB. Herbert also had to vie with David Montgomery in the backfield, but that’s no longer the case with Montgomery off to division rival Detroit. Herbert is the projected RB1 in Chicago, which helps his fantasy value after being RB41 in PPR leagues a year ago. Yes, D’Onta Foreman will also see his share of touches, but the Chicago Bears and second-year coach Matt Eberflus would be unwise to continue ignoring Herbert’s promising 5.7 yards per carry. When Herbert became the de facto No. 1 ball-carrier in Weeks 3 and 4 while Montgomery was nursing an injury, he averaged 19.5 carries, 117 yards and one TD per game.
Khalil Herbert 2022 Outlook
As FantasyPros's Fischer Smith suggested, if you have plans on drafting David Montgomery in 2022, you'll want to consider handcuffing him. Montgomery missed four games last season and one the season before. Fortunately, it's not hard to identify the best choice. Herbert took over Chicago's lead-back duties when Montgomery went down last year. Herbert, a sixth-round rookie, impressed during his short stint as the starter. From Weeks 5-8, Herbert rushed for 344 yards, never rushing for less than 72 yards during that span. He also proved his effectiveness as a kickoff returner. Aside from Montgomery and Herbert, Darrynton Evans and rookie Trestan Ebner, a sixth-round pick, are currently the only other running backs listed on the Bears' depth chart. Evans had just two carries for the Titans last season. Ebner is a versatile athlete who played quarterback, wide receiver, linebacker and defensive back in high school. He totaled 1,690 yards rushing at 4.9 per carry and 1,515 yards receiving on 127 catches with 20 offensive touchdowns at Baylor. Still, if something happens to Montgomery again in 2022, look for Herbert to have an even more prominent role than he did last year. As Smith put it, "I would not own Montgomery without trying to grab Herbert at the end of my draft this year." Considering the reasonable price to do so, we fully agree with that assessment.
