Pat Freiermuth 2023 Outlook
Even with the Steelers’ quarterback situation in disarray for much of the 2022 season, Freiermuth still had the second-most targets on the team and finished with career highs in yards and receptions. Freiermuth will likely never be the type of guy to supply a monster stat line, but he’s consistent on a game-to-game basis and can also work downfield. Scoring happens to be the one area that makes him a fantasy liability, but much of that can be attributed to Pittsburgh’s lack of success in the red zone as a team. The Steelers found the end zone on just 51.9 percent of their trips inside the 20, the 11th-worst percentage in the league. Second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett’s development is also going to play a huge role in how Freiermuth performs, and Pickett will now have the chance to utilize Allen Robinson II’s services. The addition of Robinson is really no reason to fret, though, as the 29-year-old wideout has not come anywhere close to living up to expectations in each of the past two seasons.
Pat Freiermuth 2022 Outlook
According to Fansided.com's Tommy Jaggi, the Steelers' shiny, new weapons are all the buzz. But we shouldn't forget about Pittsburgh's most reliable pass-catcher from the 2021 season. Despite a remarkable rookie season after being the team's second-round draft choice in 2021, Freiermuth's name hasn't been mentioned as much as it should be in the discussions about Pittsburgh's offensive weapons this year. And even if he wasn't a super-valuable fantasy asset, Pro Football Network contends his performance wasn't just encouraging; it was actually one of the better rookie tight end seasons of all time. In fact, he caught 75.9 percent of his targets and had just two drops on 79 opportunities. In addition, he reeled in seven touchdowns and was credited with breaking eight tackles after the catch in his first season despite somewhat limited usage in the passing game (he had a 62 percent snap share, 32nd among tight ends and his 13 percent target share was 23rd). One reason to expect a big step forward this season is his red-zone targeting. Despite his limited usage, Freiermuth led all tight ends in red-zone targets. This year, there will be a new quarterback at the helm (either Mitchell Trubisky or Kenny Pickett to begin the season), and it's hard to say which receivers they will favor or how they will distribute targets. But expecting Freiermuth to draw his fair share of the red-zone opportunities in this offense seems reasonable enough.
