Kadarius Toney 2023 Outlook
Toney was given a new lease on his NFL career when he was traded from the New York Giants to Kansas City at the NFL trading deadline last season. The 2021 first-round draft pick was already viewed as a disappointment and had just two catches for zero yards in two games with New York before being dealt. He sustained three separate hamstring injuries with the Giants in 2022 before the trade. His seven-game contributions with the Chiefs were modest, but that memorable 65-yard punt-return touchdown during the Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles created some excitement over his game-breaking abilities. Coach Andy Reid certainly was spending the offseason deciphering ways Toney could help more as a receiver. Just having the offseason to learn the system was a plus, and it also allowed him more time to build rapport with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. During his rookie season with the Giants, Toney flashed his ability with a monster 10-catch, 189-yard outing against the Dallas Cowboys. Toney twice had four receptions in a game after joining Kansas City in 2022.
Kadarius Toney 2022 Outlook
The Giants are a team in transition, but the 2022 season will still have some highs to go with the lows. According to USA Today, some of those highs will be in the form of breakout players. That being the case, it's not hard to find observers who believe Toney will head that list. ... Bleacher Report contends the Giants' offense figures to be much better in 2022, and Toney could be one of the biggest beneficiaries. They argue: "The Giants are replacing coordinator Jason Garrett as the primary play-caller with new head coach Brian Daboll, who helped craft a Bills offense that finished in the top 10 in passing in both 2020 and 2021. The hope is that Daboll will be able to help Daniel Jones improve in the way that Buffalo QB Josh Allen has. That could unlock Toney's massive potential." It's a fair point. Toney struggled to carve out a role as a rookie due to injuries and a couple of trips to the reserve/COVID-19 list. However, he showcased what he can do with the ball in his hands with a 10-catch, 189-yard performance against Dallas. He missed seven games last season and had inconsistent usage when he was on the field. With a new offensive staff in place, the hope that Toney, despite having his knee scoped this offseason, can become an elite offensive weapon is renewed. It's a reasonable expectation, and the price isn't exorbitant.
