Rashod Bateman 2023 Outlook
Keeping Bateman healthy is proving to be a chore for Baltimore. He played just six games last season before sustaining a Lisfranc foot injury and undergoing surgery. He returned to the field for OTAs in late May and is on schedule to be healthy prior to the start of the season. A plus in his participation in off-season workouts was being able to start learning the system being installed by new offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Bateman's speed is surely coveted by Monken as he attempts to liven up the attack. In his rookie season in 2021, Bateman missed the first five games after undergoing core muscle surgery. That means the 2021 first-round draft choice has played in just 18 games over his first two seasons. He has two career 100-yard outings. His lone such effort last season included catching a short pass from Lamar Jackson and turning it into a 75-yard score against the Miami Dolphins. That is one of just three touchdowns the promising Bateman has scored. The Ravens are hoping he can pop loose for eight to 10 this season.
Rashod Bateman 2022 Outlook
Bateman's rookie season was challenging in ways he could not have anticipated. He suffered a groin injury during training camp that required surgery and cost him the first five games of the season. Then after Bateman returned and started finding his groove, Lamar Jackson suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 14. Bateman and Jackson played just seven games together -- not even a half-season of work to build their chemistry and timing. That said, Bateman made an immediate impact once he started playing, finishing with 46 catches for 515 yards and a touchdown in 12 games. But the groin was an issue all season. So Bateman is eager to get on track this season. To that end, he put in considerable work with Jackson over the offseason. "It's definitely been real important," Bateman said of those sessions. "With the injury and missing time, getting that chemistry back with 'L' is important. Growth in the passing game has been a Ravens goal for several seasons, and a full breakthrough for Bateman would be a big step toward finally making it happen this year. Better still, Bateman will play a larger role in the offense in 2022 than we expected after Marquise Brown was traded to the Cardinals during April's draft. Go ahead and consider Bateman Jackson's top target not named Mark Andrews.
Rashod Bateman 2021 Outlook
Though the Ravens have been an offensive juggernaut and record-setter on the ground over the past two seasons, the Lamar Jackson-led offense has been searching for a top-flight receiver to add to the fold. Baltimore may finally have found that answer when they selected Minnesota wideout Bateman with the No. 27 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. While it might be a bit premature to cast Bateman as the new No. 1 receiver for the Ravens (ahead of Marquise Brown or Sammy Watkins), the former Golden Gopher instantly adds promise and another terrific dimension to the Ravens' offense. A stellar route runner with an excellent overall game and versatility, Bateman showcased his skills to the tune of 60 receptions for 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns in a 13-game 2019 sophomore season. This past year’s abbreviated campaign saw him tally only 36 catches for 472 yards and a pair of scores. But again, this is a run-heavy offense, throwing nearly 10 fewer passes per game than the league average per Jeff Zrebiec of TheAthletic.com.
