DeVonta Smith 2023 Outlook
Smith took a big leap in his second season and could inch his numbers up again this year. He caught 31 more passes in his second season, but his average per catch fell nearly two yards to 12.6 yards. Smith has the look of a guy that is about to follow up his first career 1,000-yard receiving season with several more in a row. He knows how to get open, and the Eagles' decision to trade for A.J. Brown prior to last season created more opportunities for Smith to find creases and holes in defenses. Smith recorded five 100-yard outings last season, and four of them came in a five-game span late in the season as he displayed colder temperatures won't derail him. The former Heisman Trophy winner at Alabama entered the league with rapport with quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was the Crimson Tide signal caller before transferring to Oklahoma. That familiarity has helped Smith quickly get comfortable in the NFL and the fact that Hurts is now locked up with a long-term deal lends itself to the relationship getting even stronger.
DeVonta Smith 2022 Outlook
There's been much ado regarding A.J. Brown joining good friend Jalen Hurts on the Eagles, but Brown is also joining Smith for what portends to be a dynamic duo in Philly. ... Smith, a Heisman Trophy winner at Alabama, is coming off an impressive rookie season with the Eagles in which he led the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches. He also set the franchise's rookie receiving yards record, but he knows there's ample room for improvement and learning from his new teammate is great way to do just that. "I'm excited, just to learn from a guy like him," Smith said of Brown. The two complement each other. Smith is a long and lanky target, while Brown is a 6-foot-1, 226-pound presence whose physicality is one of his most celebrated assets. The difference in their physical make-ups makes it unlikely Smith will learn how to emulate Brown's style, but there's plenty to take from the fourth-year wideout's all-around game. On paper, they give Hurts a sensational 1-2 receiving punch. Brown will undoubtedly cut into Smith's workload, but assuming this offense evolves (specifically, that they aren't as run-centric) and Hurts continues to develop and progress as a passer, it's not a reach to expect the Eagles to support two fantasy-relevant wideouts.
DeVonta Smith 2021 Outlook
The Eagles acquired the No. 10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft from the Cowboys in exchange for the No. 12 pick and a third-round pick (No. 84). The Eagles used the pick to draft Alabama's Smith, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. In Smith, the Eagles get a dynamic downfield threat who made a four-year impact at the college level, catching a game-winning TD pass in a national championship game as a freshman, and winning the Heisman Trophy (after a prolific season of 1,853 yards and 23 TDs) as a senior. While his diminutive size is often questioned, NFL scouts see a receiver who "plays big," citing Smith's game tape to describe a player who consistently won contested catches against bigger defensive backs and blocked aggressively and effectively. Smith was also an outstanding special teams performer for the Crimson Tide. Smith heads to Philadelphia where he'll find his former Alabama teammate (and the Eagles’ 2020 second-rounder) Jalen Hurts, who spent his first three college seasons at Alabama before transferring to Oklahoma. Expecting Smith to rekindle his chemistry with Hurts and becoming the team's most-targeted downfield threat -- with Jalen Reagor playing a complementary role -- seems reasonable enough.
