Jaylen Waddle 2023 Outlook
Waddle has put together stellar seasons in both of his NFL seasons and a third strong campaign lies on the horizon. Perhaps most impressive is that his 9.8 average per catch as a rookie increased to an NFL-best 18.1 last season. And he did that while catching 25 fewer passes than the 104 he hauled in as a rookie. Those concerns over how he would mix with Tyreek Hill were solidly answered as the partnership was certainly beneficial for both players. Waddle ranked seventh in receiving yardage last season and figures to be a regular when it comes to accumulating 1,200 yards or more. Waddle's consistency could improve. While he had six games of more than 100 receiving yards, he also had fewer than 40 yards on four occasions. Waddle caught six or more passes on three occasions but had three or fewer receptions six times. He has a strong rapport with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa -- the two played together in college at Alabama for two seasons -- so perhaps the consistency issues eventually evaporate.
Jaylen Waddle 2022 Outlook
As the Palm Beach Post noted, the stats from Waddle's 2021 season jump off the page. The 104 catches, an NFL record for rookies. The 1,015 yards, a Dolphins record for rookies. And the 9.8 yards per catch, which tied for 109th in the NFL. ... Waddle's average was the only knock on his first season in the league. Fortunately, he knows how to fix the issue. "I've got to be YAC crazy out there," said Waddle, the team's MVP. Another way to increase Waddle's average would be for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to connect with more deep balls, but that's out of Waddle's control. What Waddle does once the ball is in his hands -- that is under his control. There are reasons to expect Waddle to improve. There's new coach Mike McDaniel. And, oh yes, there's Tyreek Hill playing opposite Waddle and drawing double coverage to that side of the field. He'll also be spending time teaching Waddle some of the things that helped Hill receive six Pro Bowl invitations in six seasons. The concern, however, is also obvious. Waddle was in line for a monster second season before Hill arrived. The question now is whether the target share will continue to be high enough to support that rookie production. Either way, buying a player at below market price based on last year's production is never a bad move. Don't be afraid to do that here.
Jaylen Waddle 2021 Outlook
The Dolphins selected Waddle with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, reuniting Tua Tagovailoa, the team’s top pick in 2020, with one of his college targets. Waddle played two seasons with Tagovailoa at Alabama in 2018 and 2019 and expects the partnership they established to carry over to the NFL. "Chemistry is there for sure," Waddle said, via ESPN. "I'm coming to work. I'm sure he is, too. ..." Improving the weapons around Tagovailoa is an obvious priority for the club, and Miami wasted no time in selecting the explosive receiving talent. According to NFL.com, Alabama teammates considered Waddle (5-9, 180) Alabama's fastest player after he ran step for step with former UA star Henry Ruggs (the fastest player at the 2020 Combine) in a friendly 40-yard dash competition two years ago. Along with blazing speed, Waddle’s open-field quickness and change-of-direction skill made solo tackles on Waddle highly difficult. He averaged nearly 19 yards per catch for his college career, showing both deep speed and the ability to break big plays from short throws. NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein compares Waddle to Kansas City Chiefs star Tyreek Hill. Waddle should help the Dolphins become more explosive on offense after the club finished 15th in points and 22nd in total yards in 2020.
