Elijah Mitchell 2023 Outlook
April 2021. Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers select running back Trey Sermon, who was coming off a strong career at Oklahoma and Ohio State, in the third round of the NFL draft. Fantasy experts across the nation salivated over the fit. Those were the days. It was not Sermon but sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell who emerged from that draft to become the Niners’ lead back. Mitchell has flashed hot stuff in the two seasons since, and if he could stay healthy, he might be a top-20 fantasy running back heading into this fall. It wasn’t to be, as after Mitchell sprained his MCL in Week 1, the 49ers pulled the trigger on the Christian McCaffrey trade. Mitchell projects as a great No. 2 back in San Francisco and a flex or McCaffrey handcuff with some upside. He can still rip off giant gains when defenses are least expecting it. He’ll need to spell McCaffrey now and again. For that matter, McCaffrey has his own injury baggage, and Mitchell’s stock would soar if McCaffrey missed any amount of time.
Elijah Mitchell 2022 Outlook
As NFL.com suggested, it feels wrong not to list Deebo Samuel among the 49ers' running backs after the "wideback" became a force out of the backfield down the stretch, propelling San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game. Nevertheless, the Niners are in good shape with Mitchell as their lead back. Coming off a 963-yard rookie season, Mitchell proved ideal for Kyle Shanahan's scheme with his ability to get wide, make the correct cuts and run through arm tackles. As CBSSports.com notes, Mitchell's rise came without warning as he was drafted well after Trey Sermon, and veteran holdovers Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. seemed to have the edge in experience. But Mostert and Wilson were sidelined by injuries, Sermon was a huge disappointment, and Mitchell became a prime waiver-add after Week 1. He suited up for 11 games last year, missing the other six with a combination of shoulder, rib, finger, head and knee issues. Still, Mitchell finished 14th among running backs in PPR points per game and appears to be heading into 2022 with the lead role in his possession. It goes without saying his potential success in 2022 will hinge on his health (and the Niners added a pair of backs in April), but it's also worth noting if Mitchell leads the 49ers in rushing in 2022, he'll be the first running back to repeat under Shanahan's tutelage since Devonta Freeman in 2015-16.
Elijah Mitchell 2021 Outlook
With the emergence of Jeff Wilson Jr. last year, along with the signing of former Giant Wayne Gallman, the 49ers went into the draft with a three-headed running back monster (including presumed starter, Raheem Mostert). Players like JaMycal Hasty have some upside, too, but coach Kyle Shanahan and Co. decided to further cloud the issue by drafting two running backs: Ohio State's Trey Sermon in the third round and Lafayette-Louisiana's Elijah Mitchell in the sixth. While Sermon seems to be a perfect complement to what San Francisco currently has and will definitely get run time during the season, Mitchell might be an under-the-radar player who has a major impact in 2021. Mitchell is a burner, clocking in a 4.32 40-yard-dash -- top-end speed only matched on the roster by Mostert. Beyond that, Mitchell's skills map quite well with the scheme the 49ers currently run. More importantly, Mitchell can provide some critical help as a kick returner and punt returner. While it's going to be difficult to expend serious draft capital on any of the 49ers' running backs (other than Mostert and Sermon) Mitchell might be worth a look if your league offers points for return yardage.
