Chuba Hubbard 2023 Outlook
D’Onta Foreman took over the Carolina Panthers’ No. 1 running back spot once Christian McCaffrey was traded to San Francisco, but Hubbard also held his own in a supporting role. Over the final six weeks of the season Hubbard averaged 11.8 touches and 59.2 yards per game, buoyed by big performances in Weeks 16 and 18 against Detroit and New Orleans. He ripped the Lions’ defense for 125 yards on just 12 carries on Christmas Eve, flashing some enticing potential. Now Foreman is out, but Miles Sanders is in as the projected No. 1 back. There’s a new coaching staff, too, so Hubbard being an incumbent doesn’t hold much weight as he hopes to win over coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. They would be wise to recognize Hubbard’s 4.9 yards per carry from last year and leave this as an open competition for touches. Hubbard might not get in the end zone often or bring much value in PPR leagues, but you would be wise to handcuff him to Sanders with a late-round pick.
Chuba Hubbard 2022 Outlook
Hubbard, a fourth-round pick in last year's draft, received the bulk of the action in the backfield with Christian McCaffrey missing most of the season and the 22-year-old was up for the task for the most part. His five rushing touchdowns were the most by a rookie running back in a season since Jonathan Stewart. In Week 5 against Philadelphia, Hubbard became the first Panthers, rookie RB to rush for 100-plus yards since Stewart in 2008. According to The Riot Report's Josh Klein, Hubbard is one of only four rookies in Panthers history to eclipse 100 rushing yards in a game, joining Brad Hoover, DeAngelo Williams and Stewart. Hubbard finished that game with 134 scrimmage yards -- 101 rushing yards and 33 receiving yards on five receptions. He finished the year fifth among rookies in rushing yards, fourth in touches and second in rushing touchdowns among first-year players. Nonetheless, Ameer Abdullah was also asked to make significant contributions alongside Hubbard. And while Abdullah left as a free agent this offseason, the Panthers elected to add former Titan D'Onta Foreman, who was highly effective filling in for Derrick Henry in Tennessee. Despite last year's success, we expect Hubbard to fall to third in the pecking order with Foreman in place.
Chuba Hubbard 2021 Outlook
As if the Panthers didn't have enough open-field juice in their offensive backfield with Christian McCaffrey, the club added a home-run hitter by drafting Hubbard in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. According to NFL.com, what Hubbard brings to the table foremost is speed -- a world-class sprinter as a teenager, in 2015 he clocked the world's fourth-fastest time in his age group in the 100-meter dash (10.60 seconds) at the IAAF World Youth Championships. Hubbard is ideally suited for a zone-blocking run scheme, according to NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein. His 40-yard dash times at Oklahoma State's pro day were fast at 4.48 and 4.50, but not in the range of the expectations created by his stellar track background. Last year as a junior, a nagging ankle injury prevented him from practicing full-speed during game weeks, and hampered him on game days as well, though he still managed 625 yards on 133 carries. Now, Hubbard begins his NFL career with the opportunity of learning behind one of the most dynamic RBs in the league. Of course, with Mike Davis, who filled in when McCaffrey was hurt most of last season, now in Atlanta, Hubbard becomes an immediate handcuff in what's proven to be a prime role for fantasy production.
