Rhamondre Stevenson 2023 Outlook
The list of recent players to lead the New England Patriots in rushing in a season includes Damien Harris, Sony Michel, Dion Lewis and LeGarrette Blount. There’s reason to be more bullish on Stevenson than all of those guys combined. Stevenson, a fourth-round draft pick in 2021, became the second Patriot to notch a 1,000-yard rushing season in 10 years and the first since Blount in 2016. He eclipsed Harris, who then left for Buffalo in free agency, yielding more of the stage to Stevenson. Can he do even more in 2023? What gives Stevenson true RB1 potential is his extra contributions in the passing game. This might surprise non-Patriots fans, but Stevenson tallied 88 receiving targets last year, the third-most among all NFL running backs; only Ekeler and McCaffrey had more. He led all Patriots in receptions, just beating out Jakobi Meyers. While the Pats have bolstered their receiving corps and added James Robinson to the fold at running back, Stevenson could be on the verge of becoming the real focal point of this offense.
Rhamondre Stevenson 2022 Outlook
Pairing Damien Harris and Stevenson provides the Pats with two young runners who can break tackles and pound out yards in New England's run-first approach. The duo combined for 1,535 rush yards on 335 carries with 20 scores. With a stellar top two, the Pats still retained James White as a receiving component and used a pair of draft picks at the position, landing Pierre Strong in the fourth round, the second on Kevin Harris in the sixth. ... Even if Harris remains the lead back here, expect Stevenson's role to expand even more in 2022 as the rookie found his stride down the stretch. As Fansided.com's Mike Luciano recently pointed out, Stevenson is bigger and stronger than Harris, yet his 4.64 40-yard dash was not that far off when compared to Harris' 4.57. Harris may profile as the better athlete, but Stevenson has the lateral quickness needed to make people miss. In addition, Luciano notes that Stevenson has shown that he can play through contact, as his rushing yards after contact per carry average is right up there with names like Nick Chubb and Jonathan Taylor. While he has a while to go to reach those lofty heights, the fact Stevenson was so dynamic as a rookie despite a somewhat limited passing game role bodes well for the future -- especially with Harris heading into a contract year.
