Michael Carter 2023 Outlook
The 2021 New York Jets were forgettable, so you are forgiven if you don’t remember Carter’s rookie season. He led the Jets in rushing, starting 11 games and gaining a respectable 4.3 yards per carry while factoring into the passing game as well. It just so happens that the 2022 Jets were also forgettable, especially if your name is Zach Wilson. It wasn’t that hot for Carter, either; rookie Breece Hall came in and took over the No. 1 job with ease, and he ran for more yards in seven games (pre-injury) than Carter did in his 16. Carter kept contributing as a pass-catcher, but it was a sophomore slump of the highest order. The Jets were already a pass-heavy team with Wilson at quarterback, so adding Aaron Rodgers and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett likely will keep them that way. The best Carter can hope for in 2023 is to make friends with Rodgers and give him a sure pair of hands in the backfield while providing some thunder to Hall’s lightning. This all adds up to a limited, though hardly worthless, fantasy outlook in Carter’s third season.
Michael Carter 2022 Outlook
As Po Football Network put it: "In most cases, when teams draft running backs, they negatively impact the incumbent. In some cases, it's far worse, and the incumbent is completely vaporized. Unfortunately, that's what we have here. ..." This after the Jets drafted Breece Hall -- widely considered the top back in this year's rookie class -- in the second round of April's draft. In fact, they traded up to secure Hall's services. PFN continued: "Please do not let anyone try and spin this as anything other than a death sentence for Carter's fantasy value. Of course, he will still have a role. He's going to be Hall's primary backup. ..." The good news? Carter proved capable of excelling in a timeshare while in college, as he topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of his final two years at UNC, despite splitting carries with Javonte Williams. Like Williams, Hall is more of a feature back than Carter, who is smaller and not exactly a workhorse. Both will receive their fair share of touches, however, with Carter maintaining a prominent role on the ground and in the passing game. The Jets didn't pick Hall because they aren't pleased with Carter. The move just changes his usage moving forward.
Michael Carter 2021 Outlook
He rushed for 1,245 yards and nine touchdowns and had 25 receptions for 267 yards and two more touchdowns while sharing the workload with Broncos second-round pick Javonte Williams. GM Joe Douglas has been focused on helping the Jets create explosive plays. That is exactly what Carter did at North Carolina, turning in 23 plays of 20 yards or more in 2020. "For him to be where he was at [pick] 107 was a major surprise to all of us, including Joe and his staff," coach Robert Saleh said. "We felt like it was a no-brainer at that point." Gang Green desperately needed a backfield upgrade after averaging just 4.2 yards per attempt and 105.2 rushing yards per game, both in the bottom-10 in the NFL last year. Carter joins a Jets backfield alongside La'Mical Perine, Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson and Josh Adams. While Carter could be the leader of that group, he's also shown the ability to produce in a committee backfield, so splitting snaps shouldn't be an issue if that's how it plays out.
