Najee Harris 2023 Outlook
Sometimes a player’s fantasy value lies in quantity over quality. Harris ranked fifth in the NFL in carries in 2022 after debuting in 2021 with 307 as a rookie, which ranked second. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the first round for a reason, after all. They’re going to use Harris again and again. A few concerns make Harris more of a low-end RB1 option this time around. First, he’s failed to make the most of his heavy workload thus far, averaging 3.8 yards per attempt last year (3.9 in 2021) as the offense hasn’t been consistent threatening downfield. Of the top 25 rushing leaders in the league last year, only Harris and Ezekiel Elliott failed to crack the 4.0 baseline. A note for PPR owners: Harris’ targets dropped by a whopping 41 between his first and second seasons and the Steelers leaned toward a timeshare on third downs. And while some other running backs higher on this list project to have the bulk of the carries due to lack of other options, Pittsburgh has an intriguing RB2 in Jaylen Warren. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry as a rookie and got a respectable 12 red-zone touches (Harris had 39).
Najee Harris 2022 Outlook
Harris' rookie season proved he's the type of bell-cow back Mike Tomlin wants to employ. A bruising runner with room to grow as a pass-catcher, Harris will remain the engine of the Steelers' offense regardless of who is under center in 2022. And that volume is necessary. As Pro Football Network's Jason Katz noted, while Harris was effective from a fantasy standpoint, he certainly wasn't efficient. He averaged just 3.9 yards per carry and was outside the top 20 in evaded tackles per touch and the top 30 in yards created per touch. Still, his 307 carries trailed only Jonathan Taylor's 322. But Harris led all running backs with 381 touches thanks to his receiving role. His 14.5 percent target share was the sixth-highest amongst running backs. According to Katz, the reason that lofty target share feels sustainable even in a post-Ben Roethlisberger world is Harris' 24.9 routes run per game, which led all running backs. But will a change at QB limit him? Assuming Mitchell Trubisky replaces Roethlisberger as the Steelers' starting quarterback, it's worth remembering the newcomer targeted the RB position over 25 percent of the time during his tenure with the Bears. One other point: Harris scored just 10 touchdowns as a rookie. In an improved offense, Harris could improve on that number.
Najee Harris 2021 Outlook
The Steelers made Harris the top running back selected in the 2021 NFL draft with the No. 24 overall selection. As NFL.com noted, the former Alabama standout offers remarkable short-area quickness for a 230-pound frame, along with impressive third-down skills for receiving and pass protection. After a 1,224-yard season as a junior, Harris surprised many by returning to Alabama rather than entering the 2020 draft. He entered his senior season with 387 carries and a career-long rush of just 35 yards but extended that mark to 53 yards on what might've been the most spectacular run of his career, hurdling a Notre Dame defender in a College Football Playoff semifinal in January. Playing his final collegiate season proved to be a successful decision, as he shattered Derrick Henry's school record for career rushing yards (3,843) and showed scouts his best receiving season by far (43 catches). Speed is the knock on Harris, one that Harris answers with tape only -- he did not run a 40-yard dash at either of Alabama's two pro day workouts.
