Mac Jones 2023 Outlook
If Bill Belichick doesn't like Jones, why should fantasy football owners? The third-year QB's reportedly acrimonious relationship with the Canton-bound coach plus the across-the-board decline in his on-field performance last season raises more red flags than a Chinese military parade. Among QBs who made at least 10 starts in 2022, Jones tied for 23rd in TD passes (14) but tied for 10th in interceptions (11). Following a Pro Bowl selection and a playoff appearance in his rookie season, Jones' downturn and his October ankle injury opened the door for rookie Bailey Zappe. Zappe went 2-0 as a starter and tossed at least one TD in all four of his appearances. Assuming he retains his QB1 status in New England, it will be a make-or-break year for Jones. The Patriots' off-season upgrades -- WR JuJu Smith-Schuster and TE Mike Gesicki -- and the dual-threat emergence of RB Rhamondre Stevenson (69 catches in 2022) should at least give him a chance to win games and mend fences with the boss.

Mac Jones 2022 Outlook
The most pro-ready QB in the 2021 draft provided calmness down the stretch, along with accuracy, and Jones even dropped the occasional pretty deep ball when required in what was a solid rookie campaign. Indeed, as NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal wrote, "I never understood the narrative that the Patriots weren't asking Jones to do much. If anything, the cautious Patriots staff's willingness to ask a lot was one of the defining traits of Jones' rookie season." Rosenthal went on to note that Jones was running a hurry-up offense while throwing the ball 40 times in the rain against Tom Brady by Week 4. Immediately stepping in as a league-average starting quarterback on over 600 dropbacks is usually a sign of great things to come. Rosenthal contends Jones needs to get stronger, but that's attainable. His already-excellent pocket movement and accuracy are harder to learn. His ceiling looks higher than most analysts expected. There are some issues, however. First and foremost, Jones needs more help from his receiving corps (and a trade for Miami's DeVante Parker was a good first step in that direction; we'll see if drafting speedy rookie Tyquan Thornton is as well). Beyond that, the departure of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could mean another learning curve as Jones adjusts to the new play-caller. Still, from a fantasy perspective, Jones has a secure role, a solid floor and isn't without upside.

Mac Jones 2021 Outlook
Bill Belichick stayed put during the first round of April’s draft and watched as his desired future franchise quarterback fell right to him. The Patriots grabbed Jones with the No. 15 overall pick, making the Alabama standout the fifth QB taken in the first round. Just how quickly Jones takes over for incumbent starter Cam Newton obviously remains to be seen, but New England has its QB1 of the future in place. Jones emerges from a national title run under Nick Saban to play for his former head coach's close friend, Belichick. According to NFL.com, Jones' accuracy, poise and intangibles stand out and his arm strength is solid, but the 6-foot-2, 217-pounder doesn't have the athleticism that will pad fantasy stat columns. The Patriots, still defining their post-Brady form, get a proven winner in Jones coming off a phenomenally sensational junior season in which he threw for 4,500 yards with 41 touchdown passes and just four interceptions en route to a national championship. During the offseason Belichick and the Patriots hit free agency with an aggression never seen before in the lauded head coach's tenure, but they've been longing for their quarterback of the future. All signs indicate they found him on a Thursday night in Cleveland.
