Trey Lance 2023 Outlook
Jimmy Garoppolo is trying out a new act in Las Vegas and Brock Purdy (elbow) and Lance (ankle) are returning from injuries, making the San Francisco QB1 position a fascinating battle to watch in a training camp that will also include former Jets/Panthers starter Sam Darnold. Lance has only been on the field for four games since the 49ers traded two first-round picks to draft him third overall in 2021. It's hard to remember much from those four games except wobbly passes and some missed opportunities, but both GM John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan have raved about his recent improvements to his mechanics and self-confidence. "I think Trey is the best that we've had him right now," Shanahan said. "If you watch his feet and his timing and how he's throwing the ball, he's in such a better place than he was last year at this time." Lance turned 23 in May and has a lot of football ahead of him, whether it's in the Bay Area or elsewhere.
Trey Lance 2022 Outlook
Lance is raw and talented, with a big arm and elusive running ability. But he needs to work on fundamentals this offseason to help lead a playoff roster. Can he get there? Lance warmed up in both of his starts as a rookie last season, playing better in the second halves. He ran well and hit more big plays than Jimmy Garoppolo. The perception is that Lance struggled as a rookie, but NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal contends the numbers paint a more nuanced story. Still, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported in February that Lance "was probably further behind than people realized, greener than people realize, and is going to need more work than people realize, and [the 49ers] have a roster that can win now." Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area agreed, suggesting he's not sure "anybody knows" if Lance, the 2021 No.3-overall pick, is ready to take over as the starting quarterback of the team in 2022. Even if Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the roster, Maiocco stressed that the team believes Lance will be ready when he's called on as the starter, whether that's this year or next year. Based on the draft capital expected to secure his services, the 49ers clearly believe he has upside. Fantasy managers shouldn't ignore that -- even though it would be wise to back him up with a more proven asset heading into the season.
Trey Lance 2021 Outlook
As NFL.com framed it, "From North Dakota State, the San Francisco 49ers' franchise quarterback of the future has emerged. ..." Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers foreshadowed their general intentions in March by orchestrating a trade for the third overall selection, and their specific plan was quickly revealed with the selection of Lance. Just how quickly Lance replaces incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo obviously remains to be seen, but San Francisco has its QB1 of the future. Big and physical, Lance showcases a strong pocket presence, the ability to shake off defenders, the versatility to play under center and out of the shotgun and solid velocity on his ball. Any time a high-profile player emerges from an FCS program, questions abound regarding the level of competition he faced, but Lance has the tools and intangibles. During his one full season starting for the Bison, Lance threw for 2,786 yards, completed 66.9 percent of his passes and tossed 28 touchdowns in 16 games with no interceptions. Lance’s decision-making and accuracy are plusses, but still he could use some time to develop at the NFL level. As such, the 49ers maintain they'd love for Garoppolo to lead the team successfully as Lance learns behind him, but it also seems like they’ll be just fine if circumstances dictate advancing that timetable.
