Trevor Lawrence 2023 Outlook
You don't need a math degree to measure the progress made in Year 2 by Lawrence, who doubled his touchdown total and sliced his interceptions in half while leading the Jaguars to the playoffs. At 23, the former No. 1 overall pick matched Deshaun Watson (2018) as the youngest QB in NFL history to throw for at least 4K yards with 25-plus TDs and fewer than 10 picks. Lawrence will never be Jalen Hurts or Daniel Jones, but he did rush for five scores to cement his spot in the fantasy top 10. He formed instant connections last season with WRs Christian Kirk and Zay Jones and hopes to do the same with newcomer Calvin Ridley, a 90-1,374-9 performer with Atlanta in 2020. The Jaguars also used their first three 2023 draft picks on Lawrence's side of the ball, adding OT Anton Harrison, TE Brenton Strange and RB Tank Bigsby. Harrison is the likely replacement for blind-side protector Cam Robinson, who will miss the start of the season on a PED suspension.
Trevor Lawrence 2022 Outlook
As NFL.com recently noted, Lawrence, like most of the members of this rookie class, struggled for stretches. The No. 1 overall pick tied for the league lead with 17 interceptions (matching Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford). But there were signs of the transformational talent that made him the shoo-in top QB in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lawrence combines arm talent with athleticism and barring some minor issues, there is zero question Lawrence has the goods to be a premier QB for years to come. Meanwhile, the Jags began upgrading their supporting cast, starting with injecting speed into the offense under new coach Doug Pederson, who will focus on furthering Lawrence's development. Even if you question some of the moves they've made to upgrade around Lawrence, there's no denying the Jaguars made a substantial investment in their receiving corps (most notably Christian Kirk, Evan Engram and Zay Jones) this offseason. Beyond that, Pederson himself is a former quarterback, giving him a leg up on relating to the 2021 No. 1 overall pick. Pederson also brought in Press Taylor as coordinator, Jim Bob Cooter as passing game coordinator, and Mike McCoy as QBs coach - providing Lawrence with significant experience to train him up. Given the new coach's history with elevating QBs, Lawrence should be in for a far better 2022.
Trevor Lawrence 2021 Outlook
Lawrence has been penciled in as the Jaguars' Kickoff Weekend starter since the club clinched the No. 1 pick following its Week 16 loss. He is the reason Urban Meyer is the coach in Jacksonville, and the reason for optimism of a swift turnaround for the franchise. As NFL.com put it, "Lawrence is as pristine a product entering the NFL since Andrew Luck came out of Stanford." The athletic passer owns a quick release and fluid throwing motion. Lawrence's arm is plenty strong, and he can throw from multiple platforms. His accuracy is impressive and he can drive the ball to all levels of the field. Add to this his ideal size, mobility, the mental acumen to filter through progressions and the ability to run an offense from the line of scrimmage and Meyer (and coordinator Darrell Bevell) will have zero trouble designing an offense tailored to Lawrence's multifaceted skill set. The QB has proven he can be as comfortable running the option as he is from the shotgun spread or hurling the pigskin deep. With a supporting cast that now includes Clemson teammate Travis Etienne, James Robinson, DJ Chark, Marvin Jones Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr. there's plenty to hang your hat on here.
