Darnell Mooney 2023 Outlook
Mooney was unable to follow up his big 2021 campaign and Chicago is hoping for a strong turnaround. Mooney sustained a fractured ankle in Week 12 against the New York Jets but stated in the offseason that the recovery has gone well and he plans to be at full speed by the start of the season. The Bears are hoping that proves true, but Chicago also acquired D.J. Moore from the Carolina Panthers as the probable top target in the deal in which the Bears traded the No. 1 overall pick. A revival from Mooney would be welcome. Last season, he caught under half the amount of receptions and accumulated under half the yardage of his breakout second season. Mooney didn't have a single 100-yard outing after having four in 2021. He twice caught seven passes, but he also had two or fewer receptions in four of Chicago's first five games. Overall, Mooney has caught more than seven passes just twice. He had a 12-catch game in 2021 and an 11-reception outing in 2020. Mooney's high for TDs in a season is four.
Darnell Mooney 2022 Outlook
As Fansided.com's Evan Bruner recently noted, Allen Robinson's regression in 2021 required Mooney to take on a larger role in the passing game. Mooney was up for the task and finished his second year in the league with 81 catches for 1,055 yards. Playing in Matt Nagy's offense with a rookie quarterback and subpar offensive line did Mooney no my favors. Bruner went on to contend no matter how much the Bears' offense struggles going forward, it's hard to imagine things will look much worse than they did in Mooney's first two seasons. That's a fair point. Still, there are those who question whether Mooney is truly suited to handling a WR1 role. With Byron Pringle, Equanimeous St. Brown and 25-year-old rookie Velus Jones Jr. all joining this receiving room, none of them profiles as alphas. Let's also acknowledge the previous coaching staff absolutely treated Mooney like their leading weapon. He finished the last four weeks of the season ninth in target share (27 percent) and fifth in route participation (95 percent). With nobody worth much outside of third-year tight end Cole Kmet as legitimate competition, Mooney should build off his eighth-ranked 24 percent target share from last season if for no other reason than his strong relationship with Justin Fields, who was comfortable throwing to Mooney in big spots and showed great trust in his receiver to come down with tough catches.
Darnell Mooney 2021 Outlook
USA Today's Alyssa Barbieri recently reminded readers the Bears got an absolute steal in last year's NFL draft with Mooney, who they snagged in the fifth round. It didn't take Mooney long to establish himself as Chicago's No. 2 receiver behind Allen Robinson -- and that was without the courtesy of a full offseason. Mooney was surprisingly productive and likely would have been even more so if the Bears had more consistent quarterback play. "Especially," Barbieri added, "given Mooney typically had his man beat deep. ..." Mooney will enter the 2021 season as the WR2 alongside Robinson, which leaves the future of Anthony Miller -- the guy he passed up -- in jeopardy. The Bears have reportedly been shopping Miller, which isn't a surprise given he hasn't lived up to expectations and in light of his ejection in the wild card game against the New Orleans Saints. Many believed Miller was a prime cut candidate, but it sounds like he has suitors. Whatever the case, there's considerable hype surrounding Mooney heading into his second season, where the hope is that he'll get better quarterback play, whether it's veteran Andy Dalton or rookie Justin Fields. Mooney's speed and sure hands add to the positive outlook.
