Juwan Johnson 2023 Outlook
Johnson appears to be a starter-caliber tight end following his 2022 production for a team without a reliable or consistent answer at quarterback. He caught 42 passes for 508 yards and a team-leading seven touchdowns, numbers that aren’t out of the realm of possibility for a repeat with Derek Carr flinging the ball for the Saints in 2023. Most cornerbacks and safeties are overwhelmed by Johnson’s 6-4, 233-pound frame, but he’s more of a slot receiver playing tight end based on his quickness in and out of breaks. That complicates matchups with undersized outside linebackers asked to drop and shadow Johnson. He has more than enough speed to get vertical and clocked at 4.58 at the Combine. Johnson wasted no time passing Adam Trautman, now a backup with the Broncos, on the depth chart in 2022 and has no obstacles to the TE1 role entering 2023. Whether the suggestions that Michael Thomas could return to health and upper-echelon status at wide receiver is in doubt, but if he can make the climb alongside Chris Olave, Johnson isn’t a primary target for the Saints.
