Trey Sermon 2022 Outlook
After a relatively disappointing rookie season in 2021, Sermon, a former third-round draft pick out of Ohio State, was at least hoping for some serious improvement and had the chance to cement a greater role in the wake of veteran tailback Raheem Mostert leaving for the Dolphins in free agency. Indeed, while it seemed to be a long shot for Sermon to usurp fellow 2021 rookie Elijah Mitchell, it appeared the road to more touches was open. But as Fansided.com's Peter Panacy suggests, that whole context was completely shaken up with San Francisco grabbing LSU RB Tyrion Davis-Price with its first of two third-round picks in the 2022 draft. With Davis-Price on board, San Francisco will have five halfbacks on its 90-man off-season roster: The rookie; Mitchell; Sermon; Jeff Wilson Jr.; and JaMycal Hasty. ... Sermon managed a mere 41 rushes for 167 yards and a touchdown, only getting to start two games due to injuries to players like Mitchell and Mostert and then finding himself a healthy scratch at times later in the season. Assuming he's a lock to make the final roster would be unwise. Hasty and Wilson, too, are in danger of losing out on a roster spot because of Davis-Price. What we do know, however, is paying attention to the pecking order in this backfield can be fruitful for fantasy managers.
Trey Sermon 2021 Outlook
The 49ers selected Sermon with the 88th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. San Francisco had to move up to make the pick, trading away two fourth-rounders (Nos. 117 and 121) to the Rams. Sermon is an ideal fit in Kyle Shanahan's offense, which has seen the likes of Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert power the 49ers' rushing attack in their most successful season of 2019. Sermon will benefit from running behind fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and the schematic creativity of Shanahan, who will find plenty of ways to maximize the rookie’s talents. Concerns? The San Jose Mercury News suggests Sermon's 4.57-second 40-yard dash doesn't fit the profile of 49ers' speedsters in recent years under Kyle Shanahan. Also, there's a bit of a logjam at running back, and the 49ers aren't likely to lean heavily on any one back. But Sermon should slot in as the second running back behind Mostert. Perhaps he falls in behind Jeff Wilson Jr. or Wayne Gallman, but given that San Francisco gave up two fourth-round picks to move up to get him, it seems like they're expecting big-time contributions sooner rather than later.
