A.J. Dillon 2023 Outlook
As we’ve outlined, Aaron Jones is no longer a surefire RB1 option for fantasy owners, but do you think the Green Bay Packers care? In the first season of the post-Aaron Rodgers era, one of their greatest team strengths is their running game. Jones and Dillon are both dependable dudes with complementary talents, and both should be drafted in all leagues. In 2021, Dillon had four more rushing yards and 16 more attempts than Jones, but Jones played in two fewer games. The carry split between the teammates in 2022 was roughly 53/47 in favor of Jones. But Dillon scored all seven of his touchdowns on the ground, while five of Jones’ seven came on receptions. Dillon is the bruiser, the one who took far more carries inside the 10- and 5-yard lines, and he’ll be a nice flex play at points throughout the upcoming season. Handcuffing him with Jones is ideal if you can. When Jones was injured in Week 13 of 2022, Dillon put up season bests of 18 carries and 93 yards with a touchdown.
A.J. Dillon 2022 Outlook
It's fair to say Aaron Jones and Dillon form one of the top backfield duos in the NFL. Both men surpassed 1,000 all-purpose yards in 2021. They are thunder and lightning. Both are very versatile. But Dillon carried the rushing workload last season with 187 carries compared to Jones' 171. Heading into 2022, the loss of Davante Adams and Marques Valdez-Scantling leave the team's receiving corps shorthanded. Expecting Jones to help fill the receiving void left is reasonable. If that's the case, expecting Dillon's share of the carries to go up is equally reasonable. As Zonecoverage.com acknowledged, Dillon averaged 4.3 compared to Jones' 4.7, but Dillon repeatedly finished out games when the Packers were ahead. So, it isn't harder for him to maintain a high yards-per-carry average because the defense knows what's coming. The offense has to overpower the defense for Dillon to rack up yardage late in games. But, as Zonecoverage's Aaron Feidt wrote, "Dillon is becoming a dominant back." He had 56 broken tackles last season off of his 187 carries. He isn't afraid of contact and he can run through defenders at his size. All that said, we expect the backfield split here to be similar to last year -- but, as Pro Football Network predicts, more like the latter part of the season where Dillon was the clear lead rusher/goal-line back while Jones shared rushing duties but dominated passing-game work.
A.J. Dillon 2021 Outlook
A new era is about to get underway in the Packers' backfield. With Jamaal Williams hopping across Lake Michigan to join the Detroit Lions, Green Bay will now press forward with Pro Bowl running back Aaron Jones and 2020 second-round pick Dillon as its one-two punch on the ground. Jones has driven the backfield's resurgence since the Packers drafted him in the fifth round back in 2017, racking up 4,421 total yards and 43 touchdowns in 54 regular-season games. So what should fantasy managers expect from Dillon? As important as the well-rounded Williams was to the Packers' success the past four years, the bruising Dillon presents a powerful change of pace that Green Bay's offense has lacked since Eddie Lacy was in his prime. After returning from the COVID-19 reserve list in December, Dillon showed what he can do barreling through the Tennessee Titans' defense during an impressive 124-yard, two-TD performance in Week 16. Remember, as Fansided.com pointed out, coach Matt LaFleur loves depth at the position. Currently, the other running backs on the roster are Dexter Williams, Patrick Taylor and Mike Weber so expecting Dillon to be the primary change of pace to Jones -- with some goal-line upside -- is reasonable.
