Cam Akers 2023 Outlook
For such a short NFL career thus far, Akers has survived plenty of tumult. To catch you up to speed: Akers suffered an Achilles tendon tear while working out on his own in July 2021. He missed most of his sophomore season and returned as a modest contributor to the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl run. Then Akers put up a goose egg -- 0 yards on three carries -- in Week 1 of 2022 in a backup role behind Darrell Henderson. He reportedly requested a trade and sat out for a few weeks. But in starting the final seven games of the Rams’ otherwise lost season, Akers averaged 78.4 rushing yards, including his only three 100-yard games in each of the final three weeks. This might be a true make-it-or-break-it season for Akers, given the previously strained relationship. Henderson is out, but Kyren Williams will compete for carries and rookie Zach Evans of Ole Miss could prove to be a steal for the Rams in Round 6. “I know Cam’s had a great look in his eye,” Rams coach Sean McVay said in April. “(I) expect him to continue to build on the way that he finished.'
Cam Akers 2022 Outlook
Akers was slated for a massive role in the Rams' offense before tearing his Achilles last July and missing the majority of the season. Akers was designated for return on Dec. 23, then activated off of the Non-Football Injury List to the active roster two days later. After being inactive for Week 17, he was active against the 49ers and played 20 percent of the offensive snaps in his season debut. Akers said it's a "blessing" to make such a remarkably quick return from that injury, praising the Rams' training staff for the plan they mapped out for him and ensuring he stuck to it "to a T." In that first game back against the 49ers, he carried the ball five times for three yards in a 27-24 defeat. In four post-season games, Akers averaged nearly 17 carries and 43 yards per game but did not score a touchdown. He fumbled twice in an NFC divisional-round victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the 23-20 Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, Akers rushed for 21 yards in 13 carries, and caught three passes for 14 yards. Now, Akers and fourth-year pro Darrell Henderson are the projected top running backs for a team that has not moved to re-sign free agent Sony Michel. As NFL.com suggested, "The fact that Sean McVay rode the back in the run to Super Bowl LVI indicates where this crew is headed in 2022: Akers away!'
Cam Akers 2021 Outlook
After spending most of 2020 as part of a committee backfield -- which was, admittedly, effective in part because of its unpredictability and differences in running styles -- Akers' late-season rise has coach Sean McVay convinced they have their new bell cow. "Cam hit his stride at the right moments," McVay recently said. "Really, I think he's an every-down back. I think he's a special player. ..." Drafted with the 52nd overall pick in last year's draft, Akers got off to a slow start as a rookie, hampered by injury and a resulting lack of playing time. But when the Rams needed a significant ground-game factor down the stretch, Akers stepped up, posting his best game in a 29-carry, 171-yard performance against New England in Week 11. He stepped up even more significantly in the playoffs, rushing 28 times for 131 yards and a touchdown, finally showing legitimate flashes of what had made him a prized prospect out of Florida State. With Akers entering his second professional season (and first behind a signal-caller the caliber of Matthew Stafford), he seems to be entering a situation ripe for the taking -- especially with Malcolm Brown no longer in the mix. Akers is a locked-in RB2 with RB1 upside.
