Chase Claypool 2023 Outlook
Chicago dealt for Claypool at the 2022 trade deadline thinking it was netting a big, possession-type target who had shown such ability with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But amid the team’s struggles to protect quarterback Justin Fields, who continued to develop in a run-heavy offense begging for playmakers, Claypool didn’t quite make the first impression he had hoped. In seven games with Chicago, Claypool had zero touchdowns and hauled in receptions on 14 of 29 targets. His long reception was 20 yards or better just twice; he achieved the feat four times in eight games with Pittsburgh. The Bears hope a healthier Claypool, who was sidelined by a knee injury three times down the stretch last season, can perform to higher standards after a full offseason with Fields, who looks to finally have a top receiving threat in D.J. Moore, acquired from the Carolina Panthers when the Bears traded the No. 1 pick in the draft. Chicago took offensive tackle Darnell Right with its first-round choice with an eye on giving Fields more time to throw downfield to Claypool and Co.
Chase Claypool 2022 Outlook
Claypool has become a rising star for the Steelers since he was taken in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In 15 games last season, he had 59 catches for 860 yards and two touchdowns. That wasn't far off his totals as a rookie. In fact, as ESPN.com noted, Claypool's first two NFL seasons were almost identical in every category with one major exception: touchdowns. He found the end zone on nine of 107 targets (8.4 percent TD rate) as a rookie, but scored on just two of 104 targets (1.9 percent) in 2021. The 2020 second-round pick's reception total, yardage, catch rate, off-target rate, yards per reception, yards per target and even his end-zone targets (seven in 2020, eight in 2021) were about the same both seasons, but the scoring dip dropped him well down the list of fantasy producers at his position. As FantasyPros' pointed out, Ben Roethlisberger's lack of downfield throwing ability was part of the problem. On throws with 20-plus air yards, Big Ben graded 31st out of 38 qualifying QBs. Roethlisberger's retirement means Mitchell Trubisky and rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett will compete for the starting role. Expecting either of them to be more effective downfield passers isn't a reach. Expecting Claypool's opportunities to keep him fantasy relevant -- especially with JuJu Smith-Schuster no longer in the picture -- is also reasonable.
Chase Claypool 2021 Outlook
The Steelers know how to find great receivers. They also seem to know how to handle diva receivers. A recent article on the team's official website suggests that they perhaps have another one. Consider this excerpt from Steelers.com: "Claypool didn't need very long to establish himself as a difference-maker, as a receiver capable of making plays down the field, and he was the offense's primary deep threat throughout the season. If there was a negative, it was that it seemed as though Claypool's diva quotient increased consistently over the course of his rookie season. ..." That said, Claypool seemed to somewhat earn the title in 2020. He was the only wide receiver with a four-touchdown game last season. In fact, as SI.com's Michael Fabiano noted, Claypool's 11 total touchdowns are tied with Mike Williams (2010) for the fifth-most from a rookie wide receiver in a single season in the Super Bowl era (behind Randy Moss, John Jefferson, Odell Beckham Jr. and Mike Evans). Even with anticipated regression, it's safe to say Claypool will be locked in as one of Ben Roethlisberger's top three downfield weapons. Given his big-play ability, that role could yield high-end return even if it's not consistent on a week-to-week basis.
