Jalen Hurts 2022 Outlook
Hurts hardly left a positive final impression in the Eagles' defeat against the Buccaneers in the NFC Wildcard Round. Still, head coach Nick Sirianni backs Hurts as the Eagles' franchise quarterback. "He led us to the playoffs. Obviously we want to go further than that, (but) we're really confident Jalen is the guy that can help us do that," Sirianni said in March. Beyond piloting the Eagles to an unexpected post-season berth, Hurts dazzled with his legs -- 784 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns -- and did just enough with his arm (most of the time), as he tallied 3,144 yards through the air with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Questions surrounding his arm strength remain, but Sirianni believes Hurts has improved season after season and is confident that will carry over in 2022. "The guy loves football and he's just willing to do the things that he needs to do to get better and that's why he does continue to get better," Sirianni said. ... Expected to be ready to go by organized team activities following off-season ankle surgery, Hurts will also be expected to continue his maturation on the field and to maintain Philadelphia's ascent back up the NFL ladder. That being the case, fantasy managers shouldn't be afraid to leverage his rushing floor with the hope his receiving numbers improve following the team's blockbuster acquisition of former Titans wideout A.J. Brown on draft day.
Jalen Hurts 2021 Outlook
As the Eagles bid farewell to Carson Wentz, owner Jeffrey Lurie instructed the team's decision-makers to prioritize making Hurts successful in 2021, as opposed to creating a quarterback competition -- which likely explains the addition of veteran journeyman Joe Flacco to back up the youngster. Hurts started four games late last season, going 1-3 with 1,061 passing yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions while completing just 52 percent of his passes. Hurts added 354 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Projected over a full 16-game season, Hurts would have finished with over 400 fantasy points and over 1,200 rushing yards. Worth noting, his four starts were played under less-than-ideal circumstances. As ESPN explains, "Despite the franchise being in turmoil, a hodgepodge of injured pass-catchers, a head coach and staff on the hot seat, and, yes, that brutal completion percentage, Hurts still managed to average 23 fantasy points per game in his four starts last season, good for QB9 in total points and points per game." Hurts will need to improve that accuracy number to succeed at this level. But others (Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson) have, so it's not impossible. An improved -- and hopefully healthier -- supporting cast will help.
Jalen Hurts 2020 Outlook
With Carson Wentz under contract until 2024, Hurts doesn't figure to get many, if any, reps under center after the preseason ends. If he does, it will likely be in a Taysom Hill-style role as Hurts rushed for 1,298 yards in his senior season. His 5.6 yards per carry paced this year's class, and he predictably showed very well in the athletic drills at the Combine. And as ESPN's Mike Clay notes, Hurts is also fresh off an outstanding 2019 season as a passer in which he was off-target on only 8.3 percent of his throws (second best in this class) and averaged 11.3 yards per attempt (best). And, as NBCSports.com pointed out, the NFL is constantly evolving, constantly changing, as teams look for new twists to gain an advantage. Eagles QBs coach Press Taylor had some thoughts about that. "I do think at some point one of the big things is having multiple people on the field who can throw the ball," he said. "I think that's something [you'll see] going forward. ..." Hurts is tough and avoids turnovers, and comparisons to Tyrod Taylor suggest there's fantasy value to be had. Of course, Hurts also acts as an insurance policy for the oft-injured Wentz.
