Denzel Mims 2021 Outlook
When Mims was drafted with the 59th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 draft, hopes were high. But a lingering hamstring injury (suffered early in training camp) sidelined the speedster until the seventh game of the season. He debuted against Buffalo on Oct. 25 with four receptions for 42 yards, and while the totals were disappointing, his average of 15.5 yards per catch was noteworthy. Mims' best stretch came in three consecutive games against New England, the Los Angeles Chargers and Miami. In those three games, the first two of which were started by Joe Flacco, Mims had 11 catches for an 18.2-yard average. This year, Mims will have to adjust to a new scheme, now that new coach Robert Saleh has brought along the San Francisco passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur to be his offensive coordinator. LaFleur will install the same offense the 49ers use. That said, the Jets also suddenly have a crowded receiving corps after signing Corey Davis and drafting Elijah Moore. Expect Mims to start alongside Davis, with Moore working the slot and veteran Jamison Crowder being the odd man out. Is there value to be found in a player like Mims, who is essentially a late-round flier? Sure. Especially in deeper leagues there's no reason to avoid him.
