Laviska Shenault 2021 Outlook
As SI.com reminded readers, all offseason slot receivers were being mocked to the Jaguars in the first or second round. But after missing out on Florida's Kadarius Toney in the first round of April's draft, the team pivoted to RB Travis Etienne, to the benefit of Shenault. In addition to receiving a massive quarterback upgrade, Shenault may be the favorite to lead the Jaguars in slot usage in 2021. He and Marvin Jones Jr. each spent just over 50 percent of their snaps in the slot last year, but while Jones was more productive in terms of volume, Shenault was one of the most efficient slot receivers in the league. He ranked sixth in both yards after the catch per reception and contested catch rate on slot targets among 68 qualifying receivers last year per PFF. He also ranked 27th in yards per route run despite ranking second-to-last in average depth of target (ahead of only Deebo Samuel, who literally averaged negative air yards on slot targets). Shenault is talented enough to win on the perimeter, but his full potential may be unlocked by becoming Jacksonville's de facto slot receiver. With Trevor Lawrence as their triggerman, all the Jaguars receivers should benefit, but don't sleep on Shenault’s upside based on his likely role.
Laviska Shenault 2020 Outlook
The Jaguars selected Colorado's Shenault with the 42nd pick overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. According to ESPN's Mike Clay, the youngster is a bit of a boom/bust prospect, as he sports good size (6-1, 227) and playmaking ability. He is an explosive, physical receiver with good hands and post-catch wiggle, which suggests he has huge upside. Perhaps more of an "offensive weapon" than a true wide receiver, Shenault is versatile enough to play outside, in the slot or in the backfield (23 carries last season). Per Pro Football Focus, Shenault's Colorado receiving snaps last season broke down as follows: He aligned wide on 107 snaps, was in the slot on 75 snaps and in the backfield on 27 snaps. Since 2018, Shenault had the most yards after the catch among Pac-12 receivers (1,060), per PFF. Remember, Shenault was banged up throughout the 2018 and 2019 seasons in college. As NFL Network's Cynthia Frelund notes, the injuries add context to his 2019 season for sure, but the takeaway is that he's versatile and physical with a lot of upside. JJ Zachariason of numberFire.com believes Shenault could become one of the best wide receivers in this class and Jacksonville's lack of production behind D.J. Chark should afford Shenault ample opportunity to make an impact from Day 1.
