Henry Ruggs III 2021 Outlook
Ruggs doesn't need to hear to be reminded how the first receiver selected in a historically deep draft finished ninth in his class in receiving yards and 11th in receptions. How he was inconsistent. He had just two games over 60 yards receiving, including two goose eggs. Ruggs doesn't need to hear the critiques because the ones in his own head are worse than what others are saying. "Honestly, I don't think anybody's expectations for me are higher than myself," Ruggs said. That's understandable. Ruggs finished nearly 1,000 yards behind Justin Jefferson, who led the 2020 rookies with 1,400 yards on 88 receptions. He was also well behind fellow rookies CeeDee Lamb (74/935/5), Tee Higgins (67/908/6), Chase Claypool (62/873/9) and Jerry Jeudy (52/856/3) among others. It gives Ruggs motivation to prove his worth with by making a leap in Year 2. For what it's worth, Ruggs believes having an off-season program this year should help his cause. SI.com suggests that Ruggs has the talent to make a big leap and the Raiders need someone to emerge as a bona fide No. 1 wide receiver. If Ruggs can do that, his place on top of the Raiders' receiver depth chart should be secure for years to come and he'll provide considerable value to fantasy managers taking a chance on him.
Henry Ruggs III 2020 Outlook
Picking Ruggs was so Raiders, what with their long history of coveting quickness and the Alabama product recently clocking the best 40 at the combine (4.27). Don't tell that to Ruggs, though. The 5-11, 188-pound wideout asserted in his first press conference as a pro that he can "do more than just run." He explained: "I'm an explosive playmaker and can be a great receiver. And I don't think anyone wants it as much as I want it. I definitely think I can open up the offense. I think I'm going to make a positive impact [right away] and stretch things out with my speed." GM Mike Mayock agreed, telling reporters the decision to take Ruggs had as much to do with how he'll impact Las Vegas' other weapons, including former college teammate Josh Jacobs. "He can run the deep routes. He also gets the manufactured touches, the bubble screens, the jet sweeps," Mayock said. Indeed, ESPN.com's Ken Bowen advised readers not to sleep on Ruggs' route running. There is detail here, proving that Ruggs is much more than just a "deep ball" guy. At Alabama, Ruggs totaled 98 receptions, with 24 of those going for touchdowns. Bowen believes Ruggs can register more volume than you might expect in an offense that is desperate for speed and wide receiver production.
