Justin Herbert 2022 Outlook
As coach of one of the league's top young quarterbacks, one of Brandon Staley's most important tasks is to make sure Herbert's trajectory keeps pointing up. To then end, Staley believes continuity in the offensive system will help the quarterback's comfort. He'll also have a better understanding of defenses after two seasons as a starter. "Now what we have to keep doing is just keep expanding that knowledge, really emphasize the thing he does well, and then onboard a bunch of personnel that can bring out the best in him," Staley said. Though the Chargers didn't make the playoffs in 2021, Herbert still had a strong second season. As Staley noted, one of the factors working in Herbert's favor is that he'll have continuity within the offensive coaching staff in 2021. Joe Lombardi returns as the Chargers' offensive coordinator and Shane Day is the team's passing game coordinator/QBs coach. While Herbert already appears to be on track to continue developing into an elite quarterback, the team's willingness to keep the top end of his receiving corps intact -- specifically, retaining free-agent receiver Mike Williams to continue working alongside Keenan Allen and running back Austin Ekeler -- adds to Herbert's fantasy value. So does the QB's willingness to lean on his mobility when opportunities arise.
Justin Herbert 2021 Outlook
Herbert became the first Chargers' player to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors since 1974. Herbert, as the sixth overall selection, was the third quarterback off the board behind Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. Instead of Tyrod Taylor, it was Herbert who ended up stepping into the big shoes of Philip Rivers and the rookie proved more than capable of replacing the Chargers' great. Herbert set NFL rookie records for total touchdowns (36), passing touchdowns (31), completions (396), multi-passing touchdown games (10), games with 300 yards passing (eight) and three-passing touchdown games (six). He was just 39 yards short of besting Andrew Luck's rookie record of 4,374 yards passing. The good news? Herbert knows, even after an impressive rookie campaign, there are plenty of areas of his game to improve. "I think if I know more about defenses, coverages, pressures, all of that, I think that better helps our team," he said. With a new coach in Brandon Staley and new coordinator in Joe Lombardi, Herbert will be learning his second offense in two seasons. Similar changes have hindered other young QBs in the past from making the next leap. We'll see if Herbert's talent -- and a strong supporting cast -- helps him overcome the early changes he faces.
Justin Herbert 2020 Outlook
HC Anthony Lynn has made it clear that veteran Tyrod Taylor is in the driver's seat when it comes to the starting QB job but admitted that could change. This after the team made Herbert the sixth overall pick of this year's draft and, assuming all works out as hoped, their quarterback of the future. A change could also open the door to Herbert becoming the quarterback of the present. Lynn told SI.com that even though Taylor remains in the No. 1 spot, he's not ruling out anything once the players get on the field. "It's a competition, bro," Lynn said. "I can't just say Tyrod's gonna be the starting quarterback for the whole year if this young man goes in there and wins the job. ..." The unusual circumstances of this offseason may work against Herbert making a quick ascent, but the Chargers didn't use such a high pick on a player they think is incapable of handling the job. As ESPN's Mike Clay noted, at 6’6 Herbert is one of the biggest quarterbacks in this class. His best asset is his huge arm, though his accuracy remains a bit suspect. Herbert, who has drawn comparisons to both Ryan Tannehill and Carson Wentz, figures to add some slight value with his legs. But beyond Dynasty leagues, his immediate fantasy value is limited.
