Darius Slayton 2021 Outlook
After an impressive rookie year, Slayton's sophomore season left much to be desired. The former Auburn Tiger finished his rookie season as the team's receiving leader, and for a team that's seen its fair share of misses in the draft's later rounds, Slayton looked like a win. But as Fansided.com notes, too many times last season, Slayton was a non-factor. He caught three or fewer passes in eleven games -- even registering a game with zero catches against the Bengals. The Giants' offense as a whole took a step back, but for a player who had so much promise after his rookie season, it was especially disappointing. Then the offseason happened. The Kenny Golladay signing tightened Slayton’s 2021 projections, and then the team selected Kadarius Toney with the 20th overall pick, making for an even more crowded receiving corps. Sterling Shepard and tight end Evan Engram are still around, too, and tailback Saquon Barkley will see looks out of the backfield, making it hard to envision Slayton increasing his target share this year. Positives? Slayton gets another year to connect with Daniel Jones, better understand Jason Garrett's offense and adjust his game, but he's got a tough row to hoe.
Darius Slayton 2020 Outlook
Picked 171st overall in the 2019 draft, Slayton led the Giants in receiving yards and touchdowns last season. His role should only expand this season as perhaps the Giants' best perimeter receiver. The question is, can Slayton be the true No. 1? According to ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan, "That's quite the jump. ..." Raanan went on to explain that while Slayton is clearly an up-and-coming player, he will have to compete for targets with veterans Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard. And though Slayton's overall production is likely to increase, his touchdown rate seems almost unsustainable after he produced a touchdown on one of every six catches in 2019. That said, the hope clearly is that Slayton will continue to progress alongside fellow 2019 rookie Daniel Jones and the wideout said his connection with Jones was "growing" after off-season workouts. It's safe to say that improving the production on the offensive perimeter is one area where new HC Joe Judge and his staff will look to help their second-year quarterback. As Profootballtalk.com suggested, the more faith Jones has in Slayton's hands, the more likely it is that the two players can put up the kind of numbers needed to lift the offense to where it needs to be and the more likely Slayton will continue to grow as a fantasy prospect.
