Hunter Renfrow 2023 Outlook
Injuries and inconsistency added up to a disappointing 2022 season for Renfrow, who posted career lows in games, receptions, targets, yards, and average yards per reception. He also fumbled three times, losing one. Of course, Renfrow also lost a fumble in 2021, when he also had 103 catches for 1,038 yards and 10 scores on his way to the Pro Bowl. Those were different times for a Raiders franchise that since has moved on from Derek Carr under center. Now veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is the quarterback in Las Vegas, and Renfrow will be in the same camp as several veterans of working into a rhythm with new personnel. At any rate, he saved his best output for last a season ago, catching all seven of his targets for 63 yards and a touchdown in a Week 18 loss to eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City. Renfrow played in just three AFC West games last year. Remaining healthy for more divisional clashes and the rest of the regular season will be imperative as he aims to find his previous form.
Hunter Renfrow 2022 Outlook
As SBNation.com's Ray Aspuria noted, a hard worker who has earned the trust of Derek Carr and the previous coaching staff, Renfrow blossomed this past season by leading the Raiders in all major receiving categories posting an impressive 103-catch, 1,038-yard, nine-touchdown campaign. He was targeted 128 times snaring a 80.5 percent catch rate. A precise route-runner who is a dependable target that can consistently create separation and finds the holes in the defense to provide a sure-handed target for the quarterback, Renfrow is the type of player teams covet. Nearly half of his 103 catches were for first downs (51) which makes the moniker "Third-and-Renfrow" well-earned. As FantasyPros notes, the slot man went over 100 receiving yards in three straight games (Weeks 12-14) while maintaining a 25 percent target share. From Week 12 onward, his production generated a WR8 standing in half-point PPR scoring. But we have an issue. While Renfrow made the most of the opportunities -- and that won't change in 2022 -- it's fair to wonder how robust his role will be with Davante Adams now on board and Darren Waller still in the mix. It's safe to say targets for Renfrow will be harder to come by. So even if a repeat top-10 fantasy season doesn't appear to be in the cards, Renfrow should be busy enough to remain a viable WR3.
Hunter Renfrow 2021 Outlook
According to SI.com, Renfrow, drafted in the fifth round in 2019, has already proven to be way more valuable than what one would expect from a late-round selection. That's what happens when, as a rookie, Renfrow was able to lead all Raider wideouts in receptions with 49. Renfrow repeated that feat again last season, totaling 56 catches for 656 yards and two touchdowns. He's also been highly-rated by Pro Football Focus, finishing 42nd or better out of 120 plus eligible players over the past two years, higher than any other Raiders wideout. "Quite simply," SI's Darin Alexander Baydoun wrote, "Renfrow already has developed into a reliable safety valve for Derek Carr, especially when it comes to third down." In fact he's earned the nickname "third down and Renfrow" thanks to his propensity to make key third-down catches again and again. As is often the case in both the NFL and fantasy football, there's something to be said for the different piece in any offense. As Baydoun went on to suggest, in a Raiders offense that will feature big-play threats Henry Ruggs III and John Brown, along with do-it-all tight end Darren Waller, Renfrow is the perfect complement underneath. As such, at the very least, Renfrow has waiver-wire and bye-week fill-in value.
