Jakobi Meyers 2023 Outlook
Meyers signed with the Raiders in the offseason to become a former New England Patriot, hoping to blossom as a top target of a one-time New England signal caller. Jelling with off-season acquisition Jimmy Garoppolo figures to be a smoother proposition for Meyers considering his comfort with the offense employed by Raiders coach Josh McDaniels, a longtime former Patriots assistant. Despite missing three games due to injury, Meyers hauled in six touchdown passes, tops in his four seasons with the Patriots, and only was 62 yards shy of matching his yardage output from 2021, when he played in 17 games. Meyers only has five career carries, so expect him to remain a predominant focus through the air. Still, with Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow looming above him on the depth chart, Meyers will have to be at his best early and often to consistently get the kind of targets to which he was accustomed in New England. He was targeted no fewer than six times over the final four games of the regular season.
Jakobi Meyers 2022 Outlook
Meyers finished the 2021 regular season with a team-high 83 catches on 126 targets for 866 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 17 games. Meyers was tendered as a restricted free agent this offseason, and he signed that offer in mid-June. It's a one-year, $3.986 million contract. Another team could have signed Meyers to a contract, but the Patriots could have matched it and, if the Patriots hadn't, that team would have had to send New England a second-round draft pick. The decision to tender Meyers at the second-round level had been expected. The North Carolina State product was arguably the Patriots' most reliable pass catcher in 2021, finishing the season with two touchdowns, but leading the team in both receptions (89) and yards (906), including the playoffs. Meyers will remain a key cog in a WR corps that also will feature incoming rookie Tyquan Thornton, Kendrick Bourne, Nelson Agholor and newcomer DeVante Parker, who was added via trade in March and appears to be the most likely WR1 in this group. Meyer, meanwhile, should continue to be a solid bye-week fill in, especially in PPR leagues, where his target share (he averaged seven targets per game last season with multiple games in the double-digit target range) allows him to avoid zeroes. Just remember: With two career touchdowns, the ceiling isn't high.
Jakobi Meyers 2021 Outlook
As CBSSports.com reminded readers, Meyers finished his second season in the NFL as New England's leader in both catches (59) and receiving yards (729), but Meyers has yet to catch a touchdown through two NFL seasons. FantasyPros.com notes that last season Meyers became just the 16th wide receiver in NFL history to see more than 80 targets and fail to catch a single touchdown. According to Zack Cox of NESN.com, it's assumed that free agent acquisition Nelson Agholor will hold down one starting assignment, but following the retirement of Julian Edelman, the rest of the Patriots' depth chart remains unsettled. Though it's clear that the team sees something in newcomer Kendrick Bourne, Meyers displayed solid chemistry with QB Cam Newton last season. Meanwhile, CBS added, 2018 first-rounder N'Keal Harry is also in the mix, but his role this coming season is undefined. All said, it's fair to wonder -- whether it's Newton (with a full season in the offense under his belt) or rookie Mac Jones under center -- if this passing game won't be better in general. If so, Meyers (and some of the others) could at least have waiver-wire potential.
