Deebo Samuel 2020 Outlook
Samuel emerged down the stretch of the 49ers' Super Bowl season, but won't be available to help start another. The promising second-year receiver had surgery in June to repair a broken foot and was expected to miss 12-16 weeks. It's a big blow for a team that figures to contend for the league crown again, and for a player who battled injuries throughout his college career. Samuel proved to be a vital piece in just his first NFL season as All-Pro TE George Kittle was the only Niner posting higher receiving totals. The rookie's 14.1 yards per catch led all 49ers receivers with at least 15 receptions. His contribution in the run game was comparably valuable to the league's No. 2 scoring offense, as he carried the ball 14 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns. Rehabbing for 12 weeks would last until early September, while 16 weeks pushes him out until October. Samuel himself believes he will be ready well before that. The second-year pro tweeted that he will be back in 10 weeks, and be better than ever. If only it were that simple. Jones fractures are often times seen as one of the worst possible injuries for a football player to get, so Samuel's progress bears watching before drafting (although this could lead to buy-low situations in Dynasty leagues).
Deebo Samuel 2019 Outlook
The 49ers selected South Carolina's Samuel with the 36th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Samuel's personality and physical brand of football earned him the nickname which was inspired by the bully from the movie "Friday". Now Deebo heads to the Bay where HC Kyle Shanahan will be looking to take full advantage of Samuel's imposing skillset. In outlining his top-15 landing spots for rookies, ESPN's Matt Bowen noted that Shanahan can dial up catch-and-run opportunities for Samuel. Samuel is an aggressive runner in the open field, with the sudden movements to cut down defensive angles and break tackles. Bowen added, “He has the ability to align outside of the numbers, but I see him generating more for the 49ers out of the slot, where he can tack on yards in the open field. ..." Tight end George Kittle will continue to be a primary weapon, and the running backs will soak up targets as well. But as CBSSports.com put it, "don't be surprised if Samuel is the best wide receiver in San Francisco this season or just behind Pettis. And he could be the best rookie receiver in 2019 given his clear path to targets in the 49ers' offense.'
